When that dreaded "Storage Almost Full" warning pops up, most of us panic-delete apps or scramble to erase our favorite memories. We assume our devices are bloated simply because we take too many photos or record too many long videos.
However, managing phone capacity is rarely as simple as wiping out your camera roll, and blindly deleting items often fails to free up the space you actually need.
A recent poll of Tom's Guide readers reveals a surprising story about how our devices actually fill up: we are almost evenly divided on what causes the issue.
While 42% of voters blame thousands of photos they refuse to delete, an almost identical 41% are losing space to hidden app cache accumulating in the background.
Meanwhile, forgotten downloads and old games quietly consume the remaining storage. You do not need a brand-new phone with extra gigabytes to solve this problem. You just need to tackle these four storage traps in order. Here's how to do it.
Photos and videos are the single biggest storage drain, making up 42% of responses, but you do not have to delete your memories to fix it. Both iOS and Android let you offload original files to the cloud while keeping lightweight previews on your device.
On an iPhone, head to Settings, Apps, tap Photos, and turn on Optimize Storage.
On Android, open Google Photos, tap your profile icon, and run the Free Up Space tool.
These native features push the heavy files into cloud storage, giving you gigabytes back in seconds without losing access to a single photo.
The second-biggest culprit, taking 41% of the vote, is the invisible clutter accumulating inside everyday apps. Apps like TikTok, Instagram, and web browsers constantly download temporary files that sit in your storage unnoticed.
To clear the cache on an Android device, you need to open the Settings menu and navigate to the Apps section. From there, select a heavy app like TikTok, Instagram, or Google Chrome and tap on Storage. Finally, press the Clear Cache button to instantly wipe away the temporary files.
To clear an iPhone app cache, open an app directly, go to your profile settings, find Free up space, and tap clear. For apps without this built-in setting, open Settings, navigate to General, select iPhone Storage, and delete the app before reinstalling it.
To clear your Safari browser cache, open Settings, select Safari, and tap Clear History and Website Data.
Offline media claims 9% of the poll, usually in the form of forgotten travel downloads. Streaming services like Netflix, Apple Podcasts and Spotify let you save video and audio files locally, but those files stay there until you manually remove them.
Open your media apps, head to their download management tabs, and delete saved movies or playlists you finished weeks ago.
Enabling features like Smart Downloads in Netflix ensures the app automatically deletes episodes after you watch them, stopping future clutter before it starts.
Rounding out the poll at 8%, old mobile games take up an outsized amount of space relative to how often we play them. Mobile titles often take up two to five gigabytes each.
Check your phone's storage settings and sort your installed apps by last used date to spot games you have not opened in months. Deleting these applications provides an immediate storage boost.
