With the iPhone 17 launch just a week away, rumors continue to emerge. A photo purportedly showing the iPhone 17 Pro Max's vapor chamber has been shared online.
The iPhone 17 Pro is expected to incorporate vapor chamber cooling for improved heat dissipation. X user @LusiRoy8, who has a limited history of credible leaks, posted an image that supposedly reveals the component. It seems to cover a large area, apparently to dissipate heat from both the chipset and memory.
Unlike many Android phones, iPhones have traditionally used a graphite sheet instead of vapor chamber heatsinks. The iPhone 17 Pro is anticipated to be the first iPhone to use vapor chamber cooling technology.
This should lead to more consistent performance, since a cooler phone will not need to reduce performance to protect internal components. This will ensure that the phone maintains high performance, even when running demanding tasks.
Smartphones tend to overheat under heavy use, and the iPhone 15 Pro, which featured a titanium frame, was particularly prone to this issue. Apple added thermal management to improve the iPhone 16 Pro's thermal performance, but the problem was not entirely solved.
For the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple is rumored to be abandoning titanium in favor of an aluminum frame. This, along with an enhanced cooling system, should reduce thermal throttling of the chipset.
As AI becomes more important for smartphones, thermal heat spreaders are becoming essential. AI tasks can increase the strain on devices, increasing the likelihood of overheating. A vapor chamber will allow the iPhone 17 Pro to maintain consistent performance through improved cooling.
While overheating and thermal throttling may not affect typical users, they can be problematic for demanding users, especially in warm climates.
Some reports suggest that the cooling system may be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, potentially because this model is expected to be more powerful.
Apple is scheduled to unveil its new phones on September 9.
