A new Apple feature will be unavailable in the EU due to regulatory issues.

The AirPods Pro 3 are available for pre-order on Amazon. The new Apple earbuds with active noise cancellation and other features are scheduled to ship starting September 19.

The Live Translation feature, which uses Apple Intelligence, was revealed alongside the AirPods Pro 3. It will also be compatible with the AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2.

Apple has indicated that EU regulations are the reason for a delay.

While Apple's website does not specify the reason for the delay, the company told TechCrunch that it is related to Digital Markets Act (DMA) interoperability requirements.

Apple is not concerned about other EU regulations, such as the Artificial Intelligence Act and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which impose strict rules for privacy and data protection. The business stated that legal requirements other than the DMA were not a factor in its decision.

Apple's explanation is logical given how Live Translation works. The function allows for hands-free communication while wearing AirPods. An iPhone can be used to display live transcriptions or communicate directly with other compatible AirPods users. In these latter scenarios, both users hear the translation in their earbuds, which would violate the DMA's interoperability requirements.

EU regulations have previously prevented some of Apple's finest features, which is becoming a source of frustration. Apple's products work together easily, which is a major advantage over other hardware companies. While limiting that integration due to competition concerns may appear beneficial, it is detrimental to consumers, thus it is hoped that EU regulators will find a way to perform their duties without harming EU citizens.
