OpenAI is betting big on AMD in a deal that could reshape the industry.
A significant alliance has emerged to challenge the current AI hardware market leader. OpenAI, known for ChatGPT, and chip manufacturer AMD have announced a large partnership to collaborate on AI data centers powered by AMD processors.
The agreement involves OpenAI's commitment to purchase 6 gigawatts of computing power using AMD chips, starting with the MI450 chip in the coming year. AMD anticipates this deal will produce tens of billions of dollars in revenue over five years, according to CEO Lisa Su. OpenAI will also receive warrants for up to 10% of AMD's stock at a set price, dependent on deployment milestones and AMD's stock value increase.
For several years, Nvidia has largely dominated the AI landscape with its high-performance GPUs that support generative AI and large language models.
This OpenAI-AMD partnership poses a serious challenge to that dominance. While AMD has been a competitor, securing a large, long-term commitment from a major AI company is significant. Increased competition may foster innovation, improve availability, and potentially decrease cloud computing costs as reliance on a single hardware provider diminishes.
Notably, these long-term agreements are being made even as OpenAI's CEO acknowledges the current AI hardware spending may be a bubble. This partnership serves as a strategic measure to avoid dependence on one supplier, even if a market downturn occurs.
The stock warrant aspect of the deal incentivizes OpenAI to ensure the collaboration's success, aligning their financial interests with AMD's future. This could lead to a more competitive AI development environment, and Nvidia's response will be closely observed.
