One of the most popular apps among Pixel users is the Recorder app. It utilizes on-device AI to record and transcribe audio into text that can be searched in real time. While the app can record any audio, the user interface reminds individuals to "Record respectfully around others." Pixel 8 models and newer can create AI-generated transcript summaries. The app was launched alongside the Pixel 4 series in 2019.

The Recorder app's real-time, on-device transcription was groundbreaking. Other transcription services needed an internet connection to upload audio to a server. The Recorder app performed this function on-device, increasing security. The transcription feature was also known for being notably accurate and fast for a mobile application.
The Recorder app is receiving its Material 3 Expressive redesign, including the updated "Search recordings" field, formerly "Search your recordings." Font sizes and colors have been adjusted. Within recordings, an oblong Play button is present, accompanied by rewind (5-second) and fast forward (10-second) buttons. A Material 3-designed slider appears above the Play button and the other controls.
The application can differentiate speakers, which is then indicated on the transcript. These are labeled as Speaker 1, Speaker 2, etc., and these Speaker Labels help users follow the transcript of a conversation by identifying who is speaking. The audio and transcript labels for the two buttons above the slider have been removed.
The app bar displays the recording name, a star icon for favorites, and a three-dot menu icon. The menu offers options to:
The recording interface has been updated; the Delete, Resume, and Save buttons are replaced by Pause and Stop buttons, a larger clock, and a trash can icon in the upper-right corner for deleting files. The update brings the Recorder app to version 4.2.20250529.x and is available on the Google Play Store.
