A significant number of iPhone users are considering switching to Samsung's Galaxy or Google's Pixel foldable phones.

A survey shows that without a foldable iPhone until 2026, 30% of iPhone users will switch to Galaxy Z Fold and Pixel Pro Fold models.
SellCell, a website that compares prices to help American consumers get the most money for their used electronics, surveyed 2,000 iPhone owners about their intentions regarding the upcoming iPhone 17. With the unveiling of the iPhone 17 series just over a week away, the survey found that 68.3% of respondents plan to upgrade to an iPhone 17 model when it launches.
The anticipated upgrade rate of 68.3% is an increase of 10.3% from the 61.9% who indicated in last year's SellCell survey that they planned to purchase an iPhone 16 model. Among those planning to upgrade to an iPhone 17 series phone, 38.1% intend to buy an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max. 16.7% plan to purchase the standard iPhone 17, while 13.5% of survey participants prefer the rumored ultra-slim iPhone 17 Air.
Despite some perceptions that Apple has lost ground to competitors, 72.9% of iPhone owners report being more satisfied with their iPhones now than in previous years. This may contribute to the increased number of iPhone users planning to upgrade upon launch, even though 27.1% of iPhone owners think that Apple has "lost its edge".
Price is a major deterrent for potential iPhone 17 buyers, with 68.9% citing the high cost as the biggest barrier to purchasing a new phone at launch. 16% are discouraged by a perceived lack of innovation from Apple, while 5% are considering switching to Android.
Regarding motivators, 36% of iPhone users said a new design, such as an ultra-thin profile, a new color, or a redesigned Dynamic Island, would drive them to buy a new iPhone 17 model. Over 53% would be swayed by larger battery capacity, especially if the iPhone 17 Pro Max had the largest battery ever in an iPhone. Significant camera upgrades would convince 28% of current iPhone owners to upgrade, while new AI features for iOS would only persuade 7%.
The survey also suggests that over 30% of current iPhone users are considering switching to a Samsung or Pixel phone. If Apple waits until next year to release a foldable iPhone, as expected, 20.1% would consider switching to a Galaxy Z Fold or Flip phone, and another 10.2% would move to a Pixel foldable model. Only 3.3% said they would wait for an Apple foldable device.
While 49% of the surveyed iPhone users said that Android offers nothing appealing, 51% indicated that Android is becoming more attractive due to factors like AI (13%), better pricing (11%), better cameras (11%), and foldable devices (9%).
Even if tariffs lead to higher prices for the iPhone, 34% of respondents said they would still purchase a new iPhone. 37% would not buy a new iPhone if tariffs increase the price, and 29% will decide after seeing the final price.
