A study questions the wisdom of relying heavily on Apple Watch for health monitoring.

Smartwatches motivate and inform, but they aren’t substitutes for medical advice.
Sleep tracking relies on movement and heart rate to estimate sleep stages, so its accuracy differs from lab-based brainwave measurements. Track trends, but view detailed charts with caution.
Smartwatch medical features are not medical-grade.
Smartwatches can measure blood oxygen (SpO₂) or estimate blood pressure, but don't depend on these numbers exclusively.
Although SpO₂ readings are helpful in specific situations, such as high altitudes or COVID monitoring, they vary. Occasional dips are usually not concerning if you feel well. See a doctor for consistent low readings and symptoms.
Blood pressure monitoring on smartwatches remains challenging. While devices like the Apple Watch offer estimations, accurate readings need a proper cuff, whether at home or at a doctor's. Don't depend on your watch alone to manage hypertension.
A smartwatch is a tool, not a substitute for a doctor.
All readings have a margin of error, which can sometimes be significant. If you experience chest pain, don't assume an "ECG normal" reading from your watch means you are healthy. Always get professional medical care.
For example, a recent study reported that Apple Watches are generally accurate for tracking steps and sleep patterns, correctly identifying sleep 97% of the time and showing a small error in step counting (0.9–3.4%).
However, these watches have accuracy issues, such as slightly underestimating heart rate (by 1.3 bpm on average) and heart rate variability (by 9.6 ms). They can also miscalculate calorie burn by as much as 115% and struggle to accurately detect awakenings during sleep, succeeding only 26% of the time.
Consider your watch as a guide, not a diagnostic tool. Fitness trackers serve as wellness devices, not medical tools.
Don't dismiss serious health issues because your watch shows normal results.
Avoid panicking about every unusual reading without proper context.
To use wearable data effectively:
Focus on patterns rather than isolated readings. An elevated heart rate at 3 AM is likely a minor issue. However, consistent increases over weeks or unusual patterns during exercise could be important.
Relate data to how you feel. Your watch might indicate a low heart rate, which is normal if you are relaxed or asleep. Seek medical attention if you feel dizzy or unwell, and your watch shows abnormal data.
Confirm concerning readings. If you receive repeated alerts for irregular heart rhythms or abnormal ECG results, consult your doctor. Never self-medicate based on watch data. Always seek professional advice before changing medications.
Ensure proper fit and placement. Wear your watch snugly, especially during workouts. A fit that is too loose or tight can impact sensor accuracy.
Smartwatches are valuable for motivation, monitoring trends, and promoting better habits, but they don't replace professional medical advice. Use them carefully, understand their limitations, and combine their data with input from your body and healthcare providers.
