Amazon is exploring using AI to translate books for Kindle.

Currently, less than 5% of Amazon's books are available in multiple languages, presenting a substantial opportunity for authors to broaden their audience.

Although AI is not flawless and errors may occur, Amazon allows authors to review translations before publication. However, those not fluent in the language may still need a human translator to ensure accuracy. Amazon states that translations are "automatically evaluated for accuracy" but has not disclosed the method.

Authors can manage all aspects, such as selecting languages, setting prices, and publishing their translated works, from the Kindle Direct Publishing portal. Readers will see books translated by AI clearly labeled as "Kindle Translate" and can preview samples before purchase.

The Kindle translation service is currently free, which is significant for self-publishing authors, as other AI translation tools can be expensive.

By providing its own service, Amazon retains authors within its platform. Once the beta phase concludes and more languages are included, it may become a paid service.

While some may question AI translations, particularly for literary works, human translators remain superior at capturing nuance and subtle meaning. However, AI is rapidly advancing, and with Amazon's investment, Kindle Translate could soon produce high-quality translations that effectively convey the original work.
