An upcoming Pixel phone may signal a shift in Google's strategy.

Pixel 10a looks as useless as a glass hammer, but that's only natural: Google finally shows its real face
The choice to equip the Pixel 10a in 2026 with the Tensor G4 chip may seem like an error. This is the same processor used by the Pixel 9 series in 2024, and consumers often want something more up-to-date in a new device. Using a processor that is already two years old could make the phone seem dated when it is released.
However, the situation is more nuanced, as the Tensor G5, expected to be the top-tier chip for the Pixel 10 and 10 Pro, might not represent a significant leap in performance.
The Tensor G5 is Google's first processor designed entirely in-house and manufactured by TSMC. This marks a key step, as the first four Tensor generations were jointly developed with Samsung. While the G5 offers improved efficiency and a stronger focus on AI, it still doesn't match the speed and graphics capabilities of the newest Snapdragon processors.
Therefore, while the Pixel 10a's Tensor G4 is an older model, the improvement to G5 might not create a major performance difference that would immediately render the more affordable phone obsolete.
Pixel 10a: a good choice?
In reality, the Pixel 10a with Tensor G4 should still be a capable device. It will be able to handle daily tasks, support many of Google's AI features, and receive updates for years, thanks to Google's seven-year OS update policy.
The main question is its value. When the new phone is released, the Pixel 9a will be even more affordable and still guaranteed to receive updates well into the 2030s, so why buy the Pixel 10a? For many people, the older model may be the better option.
This is where the risk lies. If Google restricts its most advanced AI features to the Tensor G5, the Pixel 10a could become unappealing.
If the design, chipset, and cameras are not significantly different from the Pixel 9a, AI capabilities may be the only area where the 10a stands out. If the Tensor G4 struggles to keep up, the Pixel 10a could seem like a recycled device, of which there are already many.
