Apple could create a great smartphone AI, but shouldn't just copy ChatGPT.

Apple has the chance to launch a killer AI system, and failing could mean the company is really doomed.
Siri should match the capabilities of Perplexity. Living abroad, I often seek context on local news. Perplexity provides helpful summaries with links to sources. I would prefer Siri handle this instead of using a separate application.
People don't want Apple Intelligence to be just another chatbot or coding assistant. Other apps exist for that, and they can succeed on Apple devices. However, even Gemini and Galaxy AI can't perform basic phone functions expected of Siri and Apple Intelligence. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for Apple.
Apple's future is at risk unless improvements are made.
Apple has been able to ignore Siri's shortcomings because voice assistants were not a priority for users. However, ChatGPT, the rise of AI, and Google's Gemini are changing user expectations, which could spell trouble for Apple.
While some critics say Apple is too far behind in AI to catch up, no smartphone maker has truly delivered practical and appealing AI features. Google fans might disagree, but Gemini isn't quite there yet either, although it is the closest.
This is where Apple has an advantage. With its walled garden, the most popular smartphone globally, and the existing features everyone else is improving, Apple could create a groundbreaking AI system that enhances the iPhone. Success would secure Apple's future, but failure could lead to its downfall.
