A security feature on iPhones is reportedly causing delays for some customers trading in devices for the new iPhone 17. "Stolen Device Protection" can create an hour-long wait, but there's a way to avoid it by preparing your phone beforehand.
On launch day, some customers picking up new iPhone 17 models are experiencing issues. The "Stolen Device Protection" feature, part of iOS 17.3, is causing delays at Apple Stores due to a mandatory one-hour waiting period for trade-ins.
This feature protects accounts by requiring a one-hour delay for actions like disabling "Find My" when the phone is not at a familiar location, such as home or work. Because disabling "Find My" is required for trade-ins, and Apple Stores are not considered trusted locations, the delay is triggered. This is leading to lines and frustration at locations such as the New York Apple Store.
To avoid this, disable "Find My" in your settings while still at a trusted location before going to the store.
If already at the store, open the "Find My" app, choose your iPhone, and select "Remove." Then, prepare the device for trade-in by confirming with your Apple ID password to bypass the delay.
This situation highlights how Apple's focus on security can create user inconvenience. While the feature works as intended, it has led to a less-than-ideal launch day experience. This is a notable issue for Apple, a company known for prioritizing a seamless user experience.
Although "Stolen Device Protection" is useful, not foreseeing this issue during the iPhone launch seems like an oversight. The anticipation of a new phone can diminish when facing an hour-long wait.
The most effective security is often unnoticeable until needed. While this feature is generally beneficial, it can create a negative user experience in this situation. To avoid delays when trading in an iPhone, disable "Find My" at home. This will prevent complications and expedite the process of getting a new iPhone 17.
