AT&T's network can now automatically repair itself in real time.

An AI-powered system already live nationwide simulates coverage scenarios and suggests real-time network adjustments.
AI is being implemented by AT&T to anticipate network issues and respond instantly, rather than waiting for problems to arise.
The Wireless Geo Modeler, a Generative AI system, is central to this strategy. It employs synthetic data and a Network Foundation Model (NFM) to conduct numerous simulations of different scenarios. The system then proposes solutions or adjustments to maintain coverage across various conditions.
For example, if a tower fails, the AI can determine how to reconfigure nearby towers within seconds to compensate. The system can also make routine adjustments, such as modifying antenna angles, to optimize performance.
Human operators still review the AI's recommendations, but the speed of the system is a significant advantage.
According to Will Townsend, vice president and principal analyst at Moor, Insights & Strategy, the ability to predict network parameters in real-time is highly valuable for service assurance, especially during natural disasters.
In simpler terms, AI could lead to fewer dropped calls and more dependable service when it is most crucial.
The Geo Modeler also improves connectivity for drones, which are used by first responders to assess disaster areas.
With AI assistance, AT&T can identify optimal flight paths and altitudes for drones while simultaneously refining the network.
The Geo Modeler is currently operational across the United States.
AT&T is moving toward self-healing networks that can automatically adapt and allocate resources as needed. This is especially useful during major events, such as hurricanes or large gatherings.
This advancement helps AT&T compete with rivals like T-Mobile, which is developing emergency satellite and drone technology, and Verizon, which is working on AI-driven 911 upgrades. All carriers aim to provide reliable service during emergencies.
This application of AI is a practical one that could help maintain crucial connections.
However, the reliability of AI in making quick decisions will need to be assessed under pressure. If successful, AT&T could gain a significant advantage in disaster preparedness.
