Capcom has spoken about the title behind Mega Man: Dual Override, including the reason why it won’t be called Mega Man 12.
All of the mainline entries in the core series have had a number. Prior to this project, Capcom shipped Mega Man 11. We were interested to find out why the tradition wasn’t carried forward.
Nintendo Everything was recently able to speak with Mega Man: Dual Override producers Shinngo Izumi and Hiroyuki Minamitani as well as director Shinya Ikuta. During our discussion, one of the things we brought up was the name.
The main takeaway here is that Capcom wanted this game to be as inviting as possible. Following the release of Mega Man 11, the company felt that some potential players may have been intimidated by the numbering.
Here’s the full excerpt from our interview:
Mega Man has been going with numbered entries for a long time, but this title is going with a subtitle and forgoing having a number. Can you talk about that and where this game’s title came from?
So the reason behind this naming convention is that we felt that if the number goes too high, it might add a certain level of stress and may kind of turn off people who are brand new to the series. Hence this direction of main title and subtitle, Mega Man: Dual Override.
Is that something that you discovered after releasing Mega Man 11 that people felt intimidated by being so far along the franchise?
Yes, this is something that we learned after releasing Mega Man 11.
And you felt it impacted the sales numbers?
So we can’t say specifically whether it affected sales numbers or not, but there were comments from players saying that when they see a title like Mega Man 11, they felt like, “Oh, maybe it’s not the right time for me to jump in and to try it out.” So that’s something that we felt we wanted to address.
Mega Man: Dual Override will be coming to both Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch in 2027. In case you missed it, we have a brand new trailer here.
