Ex-Far Cry Boss Has Big Ambitions For New StarCraft Shooter: 'If We Were To Make Something That Felt Like A Deadwood In Space I Think That's Got Something' - Kotaku
We wanna make sure we deliver something that is fun, something that is powerful, and something that allows you to explore. We think about the community. We think about what they want to say.
Blizzcon 2026 Dan Hay StarCraft
The biggest announcement at BlizzCon 2026 was a new StarCraft shooter, complete with a cinematic teaser trailer that felt reminiscent of Starship Troopers without the camp. But the game isn’t coming out until 2030, and for that reason, the team is sounding pretty vague and tight-lipped in the interviews coming out of the convention. So what can we glean from how Blizzard is thinking about the upcoming shooter?
“One of the shows that I loved was Deadwood,” StarCraft franchise lead and former Far Cry boss, Dan Hay, told Destin Legarie in an interview at BlizzCon. “I loved all the characters in it and I loved how it felt like a universe in a world but it was just a cast of a fairly small group of characters, but it felt bigger and I loved how they all knew each other and they all did not get along but they all understood they kind of had to rely on each other to survive. And if we were to make something that felt like a ‘Deadwood in space,’ I think that’s got something.”
That was not the mood of the teaser trailer at all, though elsewhere in the interview, Hay suggested the game would showcase moments both big and small, so maybe fans shouldn’t expect it to be all massive battles or quiet character beats, but some mixture of the two.
What Hay did confirm was that StarCraft will focus on a Terran Marine’s experience, seemingly as they face a threat from the Zerg, with a “story that is about a single character who is going through this sort of from zero to hero type of experience.” It will also have a “beginning, middle, and end,” suggesting a traditional story campaign with a clear through line.
He also hinted at, though didn’t confirm, that the game will have a third-person point of view, because what’s the point of playing as a 10-foot-tall, 1,000-pound marine if you don’t get to look at the armor? There will likely be some sort of swappable gear and upgrade path for the character as well, though again, Blizzard resisted confirming anything concrete like whether it would be a traditional loot shooter system or something less conventional.
As for what you’ll actually do in the game, Blizzard isn’t being coy about it being an open-world experience. What does that mean, exactly?
“So, when we think about from the answering that question from the standpoint of like gameplay, step out into the open world and explore,” Hay said. “Step out in the open world and discover things. Look out and explore all the things you can do. Go in any direction you want to go and then discover that, hey that reminds me of something that I saw in a previous game, or that looks like that’s something interesting, and then understand that our factions are disruptive, that the world that you think is in front of you is going to push back and fight back and we want it to feel like that.”
That could mean just about anything, but one possibility is a world that feels somewhat like Far Cry, the open-world Ubisoft franchise Hay spent years working on prior to joining Blizzard. A world that reacts, changes, and pushes back against your actions? Maybe one with outposts you have to liberate and a balance of power you have to navigate as you move through the story? Maybe, even, things won’t be entirely as they initially seem? Four years out from launch, I’m sure there are many unsettled questions inside the developer meetings for StarCraft, or answers that could still continue to shift.
Speaking of the 2030 release date being so far out, why is the team announcing anything at all right now? “You walk a funny line, because it’s like, you wanna tease, and we wanna say, ‘Hey, this is where we wanna land,’” Hay told IGN in a separate interview. “The reason why I love a really good date, is because the reality is that it puts a target. It allows us to say to a team that that’s what we’re going for. It’s a rallying cry, and we’re focused on that. We wanna make sure we deliver something that is fun, something that is powerful, and something that allows you to explore. But I also like the idea that there’s a frame that keeps us honest. And it says, ‘2030, let’s go.’”
He elaborated further in comments to GamesRadar, where Hay compared the chance to work on the iconic Blizzard franchise to winning the “cosmic lottery.” “We’ve been working on this thing for a little bit,” the StarCraft GM said. “We’re super proud of it. We feel good about it, and so it’s important that we share. We think about the community. The community has been waiting for a long time, and we think about them. We think about what they want to say. So we said to ourselves, ‘Is now the right time to start to show just an inkling of this story?’ And the answer is absolutely.”
