Future Pixel phones are expected to include a feature already familiar to iPhone users.
This feature can save you time allowing you to know in advance whether you want to open a notifcation.
After an incident where the BBC was incorrectly identified as a source of "fake news" in an AI-generated summary, Apple made it more evident when notifications were AI-generated by displaying them in italics. Google introduced a similar Pixel AI Summaries feature in November 2025. This function provides key points from longer messages, allowing users to understand the message's content before opening it.
AI Summaries is compatible with messaging apps like Google Messages and WhatsApp on Pixel 9 and later models, excluding the Pixel 9a. Currently, it supports English messages, with plans to include additional languages in the future. The feature is designed for longer messages needing summarization and will not work with messages containing only emojis.
If AI Summaries isn't functioning, disabling battery saver mode, restarting the phone, and ensuring a network connection can resolve the issue. When active, users can quickly grasp a message's essence and decide whether to read or dismiss it.
To use AI Summaries on compatible Pixel models, enable it in Settings > Notifications > Notifications Summary. Activating Notifications Summary will cause messages to appear in notifications with a Gemini AI icon, indicating AI summarization.
Users can exclude specific apps from AI Summaries by navigating to "Manage Apps" under the "Don't include these apps" section. By selecting "All Apps" from the "Most Recent" menu, users can toggle off AI Summaries for individual messaging apps.
Whether Google will extend this feature to older Pixel models like the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel 8 remains uncertain but not impossible, as the company has previously brought exclusive features to older devices.
