Garmin Fenix 9 brings new Pro hardware, Solar models and 64GB storage - Gadgets & Wearables

Garmin has released the Fenix 9 series. Buyers can choose between standard Fenix 9, full-titanium Fenix 9 Pro models, MIP-based Pro Solar watches and separate Pro inReach versions with LTE and satellite connectivity.

The devices are now listed directly on Garmin’s website in the UK and some other regions – so after weeks of rumours – we have all the final details. And it seems the company is sticking closely to the familiar Fenix formula.

Garmin has effectively split Fenix 9 into five main configurations. There is the regular Fenix 9 with AMOLED, Fenix 9 Pro with AMOLED, Fenix 9 Pro Solar with MIP, Fenix 9 Pro inReach with AMOLED, and Fenix 9 Pro inReach Solar with MIP.

The regular Fenix 9 and AMOLED Pro models are available in 43 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm sizes. Solar starts at 47 mm, so anyone wanting the smaller 43 mm case will need to stick with AMOLED.

The standard Fenix 9 remains relatively close to the Fenix 8 from a construction standpoint. It uses a fibre-reinforced polymer case with a titanium rear cover, while Garmin pairs that with a titanium bezel and sapphire lens.

Fenix 9 Pro is where the physical design changes more significantly. Garmin has moved to a full titanium case, replacing the polymer middle section used on the standard watch and giving the Pro a much more substantial metal construction.

That also explains why the visual differences between Fenix 9 and Fenix 9 Pro are easier to see from the side than from the front. The basic Fenix design remains familiar, but the Pro carries the titanium finish through the case flanks and lug structure rather than limiting the metal to the bezel and rear cover.

Garmin has otherwise kept the hardware that defined Fenix 8. The range still includes five physical buttons, a touchscreen, built-in LED flashlight, speaker and microphone, multiband GNSS with SatIQ, 10 ATM water resistance and diving support down to 40 metres.

The AMOLED Pro models are rated at up to 3,000 nits, making screen brightness one of the clearer differences between the standard Fenix 9 and Fenix 9 Pro. As far as we can see, Garmin does not quote the same maximum brightness figure for the regular model.

Display size also finally changes properly on the biggest watch. The 51 mm Pro moves to a 1.5-inch AMOLED display rather than sharing the same 1.4-inch screen as the 47 mm model, reducing some of the wasted bezel space that was obvious on previous 51 mm Fenix watches.

Fenix 9 Pro Solar replaces AMOLED with a sunlight-visible transflective MIP display. So that option is still available for those who prefer that type of display.

Interestingly, the Fenix 9 generation arrives without a MicroLED model. Garmin introduced that technology with the 51 mm Fenix 8 Pro. It appears the company has decided not to upgrade it this year.

Every Fenix 9 model moves to 64 GB of internal storage, doubling the 32 GB available on the Fenix 8 generation. That gives users considerably more room for offline maps, Outdoor Maps+ content, music and other locally stored data.

Garmin says the new watches can hold roughly 7,000 songs, although mapping is probably the more useful reason for the extra capacity on a Fenix. Anyone keeping several regions downloaded at once should have much more breathing room than before.

The sensor story is much less dramatic. Garmin continues with its existing health platform, including ECG, Pulse Ox, wrist temperature, HRV, advanced sleep tracking and the familiar recovery and training metrics, rather than introducing a new generation of optical heart-rate hardware.

That means there is no headline new health sensor to justify upgrading from a Fenix 8. The most tangible hardware improvements sit elsewhere.

Battery life is similarly not a universal leap across the entire generation. The standard 43 mm Fenix 9 remains rated at up to 10 days in smartwatch mode, while the 47 mm Pro inReach reaches up to 18 days compared with 15 days on the equivalent Fenix 8 Pro.

Solar will naturally be the endurance-focused choice. The combination of a MIP display and Power Sapphire charging gives Garmin a bit more room to stretch battery life than on the AMOLED models, particularly for extended outdoor use.

Perhaps the most important change to Garmin’s naming system is that inReach is now separate from Pro. A Fenix 9 Pro without “inReach” in the name does not include the satellite and LTE hardware, while Pro inReach models add the communication features introduced with Fenix 8 Pro.

Those watches provide LTE and satellite connectivity, interactive SOS, satellite text messaging, LTE messaging and calls, LiveTrack without carrying a phone, weather access and location check-ins. The satellite and cellular services require an inReach subscription and appropriate network or satellite coverage.

There are also inReach Solar versions for buyers who want both the communications hardware and the endurance advantages of MIP. Garmin therefore no longer forces AMOLED on users who want satellite connectivity.

The return of a 43 mm Pro option is another notable change. Fenix 8 Pro was limited to 47 mm and 51 mm, whereas the new generation brings the smaller case into the Pro family and also offers an inReach-equipped 43 mm configuration.

The software changes are more evolutionary than dramatic, but there are several genuinely new additions. Garmin Epic is probably the most interesting, allowing activities from a longer adventure to be grouped into a single overall experience rather than leaving every stage sitting separately in the activity history.

A multi-day hiking or cycling trip is an obvious use case. Garmin can combine the individual activities and associated information into a broader record of the trip, including a recap after the adventure is finished.

Garmin has also expanded its multisport and endurance tools. The Fenix 9 feature set includes mixed-session multisport recording, rucking additions, grade-adjusted-pace workouts, more advanced indoor-rowing metrics and an enhanced Stamina model.

Mapping receives attention as well, with Garmin promising smoother routable maps and additional viewing options. The combination of more storage and changes to map presentation should be particularly useful on Fenix, where navigation remains one of the main reasons to choose the range over Garmin’s less expensive watches.

Other additions include ArcheryX, which introduces dedicated archery tracking and real-time feedback, along with further expansion of sports scores and GameOn support. None of these completely changes what a Fenix can do, but together they broaden an already enormous feature set.

For existing Fenix 8 owners, the upgrade is not automatically compelling. The standard Fenix 9 is particularly close to its predecessor, while the bigger changes come if you want the titanium Pro construction, 3,000-nit display, 51 mm 1.5-inch screen, 64 GB storage, a smaller Pro watch or one of the new combinations of Solar and inReach.
