Garmin released a new kids' smartwatch that is more expensive but doesn't offer significant improvements.

The Bounce 2 gets a fancy screen and a few new features, but its new $300 price tag is a head-scratcher.
Garmin's latest smartwatch for kids includes an improved display and new features, but its doubled price may deter parents.
The Bounce 2, Garmin's follow-up to its 2022 kids' smartwatch, has arrived with some notable changes. While the original offered LTE tracking and messaging for $150, this new version costs $299.99, with the upgrades seeming somewhat limited.
The primary updates include a new round design featuring an enhanced 1.2-inch AMOLED display, plus two-way voice calling, which improves upon the original voice-message-only system. It also introduces voice message transcription.
Other features, such as real-time location tracking via the Garmin Jr. app, geofencing alerts, and a two-day battery life, remain. Amazon Music is now supported, potentially impacting battery performance. Despite the watch's price increase, the LTE subscription cost remains at $9.99 per month.
The original Bounce was appealing due to its affordability. At $150, it allowed parents already using Garmin products to easily monitor their children. With the price increase to $300, the Bounce 2 now competes with more feature-rich devices, creating a difficult situation.
For a similar price, a cellular Apple Watch SE is often available. Although the Apple Watch requires an iPhone for setup, it provides a complete operating system, a large app store, and broader functionality for a child's evolving needs. The Bounce 2 remains a basic tracking and communication device. While its new AMOLED screen enhances its appearance, it's questionable whether this and two-way calling justify the doubled price. Garmin seems to be charging a premium for what is still an entry-level device.
The price is simply too high.
The Bounce 2's upgrades are appreciated, but they don't justify the price increase. The original was a straightforward, affordable tracker, a key benefit that this new version lacks.
For $300, there are better alternatives. Consider a discounted Apple Watch SE for older children or other kids' smartwatches that prioritize affordability. While the new design and screen are improvements, the original Bounce's value is gone. This price point feels like a mistake.

Garmin's first kid-friendly smartwatch with built-in LTE connectivity is here at $150. The Fitbit Ace LTE gets new features for your active kids and family this holiday season.
