Gemini's upcoming image editor aims to address common issues with AI-generated photos.

With a new focus on character consistency, Gemini's photo editing just got a lot more useful.
The new feature lets users upload a photo of themselves, a friend, or a pet and make alterations while retaining the subject's likeness. Gemini can add a 1960s beehive hairstyle or put a chihuahua in a tutu, while keeping facial features recognizable. This marks an improvement over the results from competing AI models.
Beyond simple cosmetic alterations, the update offers capabilities such as blending multiple images to place a portrait next to a dog on a basketball court. It also supports multi-turn editing, so users can start with an empty room, then instruct Gemini to paint the walls, add a bookshelf, and place a coffee table, with the image changing at each step. Users can also apply the style and texture from one object to another, like designing a dress using a butterfly wing pattern.
This represents a step forward for AI image editing, shifting the focus toward practical usability instead of raw generation. Character consistency transforms Gemini into a creative tool for everyday use. If it performs as expected, this feature could give Google an advantage, potentially making the Gemini app the primary destination for personalizing photos.
The updated capability is being introduced in the Gemini app starting today, and all edited images will have a watermark to identify them as AI-assisted.
