Google Chrome on Android is getting new AI-powered features.

With its new AI features, the Chrome browser will become more proactive than reactive.
Google has announced improvements to its Chrome browser, using AI to make it more proactive. The company stated that the goal is to develop a browser that understands the web, improves productivity, and enhances online safety, moving beyond simply displaying web pages. This approach echoes Google's recent statements at the Made by Google event regarding Gemini and the Pixel 10 series.
Chrome will become an AI-driven browser that analyzes user activity by monitoring open tabs and browsing history to determine current and future needs. Google plans to achieve this through several new features.
For instance, students researching topics with numerous tabs open can use Gemini, the AI browsing assistant, to answer questions about articles, explain references in YouTube videos, and locate previously visited pages.
Gemini in Chrome, initially available on Windows and Mac, with iOS and Android versions coming soon, will understand the context of tasks across multiple tabs. It will also answer questions and integrate with Google services like Google Docs and Google Calendar, allowing users to summarize articles and ask questions on the go.
Google is also developing agent capabilities for Chrome, enabling the browser to manage complex tasks such as grocery shopping. Chrome will handle the repetitive aspects, allowing users to complete the task with minimal interaction.
The Chrome address bar, or omnibox, will be enhanced with AI Mode, which can handle complex, multi-part questions. Users can ask a question and then pose a follow-up query. Contextual search suggestions will also appear, tailored to the webpage being viewed. For example, when shopping for a mattress, the omnibox might suggest searching for warranty information.
According to Google, this enhancement will simplify information retrieval from the Chrome omnibox, leveraging Google AI for improved web navigation. Contextual suggestions are currently available in the U.S., with AI mode in the omnibox arriving later this month, initially in English, followed by more countries and languages in the coming weeks.
In addition to streamlining daily tasks, Google is employing AI to auto-fill login credentials and prevent security issues like compromised passwords and spam notifications. Google reports that AI has reduced scam and spam website notifications for Android Chrome users by 3 billion daily. Google will also unsubscribe users from websites to prevent spam. The browser will also alert users to potential malware on installed apps, allowing them to remove the apps.
While AI may not appeal to everyone, its integration into Chrome could prove valuable. Google's concept of using AI to understand on-screen context and proactively deliver relevant information is appealing. The agent capabilities of AI will enable Chrome to manage time-consuming tasks, such as weekly grocery shopping.
In other news, "Iconic Phones: Revolution at Your Fingertips," a coffee table book, is scheduled for release in a few months. The book will explore the technological advancements of the 21st century.
