Google has announced that an annoying bug will not be fixed on the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10.

A feature on the Google Phone app used by many is laggy or not working at all on some Pixel units.
Imagine using your phone's speaker during a call, and needing privacy, you tap the speaker button to switch to the earpiece, but it delays or fails, exposing your conversation. This occurs on both the stable Android 16 and the latest Android 16 QPR2 Beta 3.2.
The problem emerged last May when a Pixel 9 Pro user noticed a lag when activating the speaker after pressing the icon. In September, a Pixel 10 Pro XL user reported inconsistent speakerphone activation via the full-screen phone app, requiring repeated taps. However, using the notification button worked consistently.
This suggests the Google Phones app is the source. Some users reported reverting to an older app version resolved the delay. Although it seems minor, the issue persists despite Google's awareness.
A frustrated Pixel 10 Pro XL user wrote, "I just want the speakerphone icon to actually work right when I press it at the start of a phone call. The most annoying bug on this Pixel 10 Pro XL since it launched and hasn't been fixed yet." Despite reaching the Issue Tracker in August, Google posted "Status: Won't Fix (Infeasible)" on October 20th.
The Issue Tracker stated insufficient information led to closure and advised users to file new reports with relevant information and links to the original issue. The current workaround involves using the notification toggle instead of the Google Phone app button or using another phone app.
Google's decision not to address this speakerphone issue on Pixel 9 and 10 series phones is frustrating for users who rely on this feature. Hopefully, Google will find a solution soon.
