Google has enabled call recording on Pixel 6 and newer phones.
Depending on which Pixel model you have and where you live, you can protect yourself by recording your calls.
The "Call Recording" option lets you record any call. When enabled, each incoming or outgoing call will prompt you to ask if you want to record it. Recorded calls can be set to be automatically deleted after 7, 14, or 30 days, or set to never be deleted. Recordings can also be manually erased.
The settings also allow automatic recording of calls from numbers not in your contacts list. You can also choose specific contacts for automatic recording of both incoming and outgoing calls.
For manual recording, select the "Call Assist" button during a call, then "Call Recording" or "Take Notes". After a countdown, a message will alert all participants that the call is being recorded. Automatic call recording starts without manual input.
The "Call Recording" feature is available on a Pixel 6 Pro running Android 14. When making a call, a prompt appeared to ask about recording. This is useful for verifying conversations, but is only available where call recording is legal.
"Call Recording" is available on Pixel phones (Android 14+) and other phones (Android 9+) using the Phone by Google app. Install the latest version of the app from the Play Store.
To start call recording:
Non-Pixel phones:
Open the Phone app.
Make or receive a call.
Tap "Record" on the call screen.
Tap "Stop recording" to end.
Pixel phones:
Open the Phone app.
Make or receive a call.
Tap "Call Assist", then "Call Recording".
To stop, tap "Call Assist", then "Stop".
Pixel 9 and 10 series phones have "AI Call Notes," which provides transcriptions and summaries. This feature is supported in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, Japan, and India (beta preview).
Basic call recording on Pixel 6 and later is available in India, Canada, and other regions allowing one-party consent recording.
For questions about the feature, refer to Google's Support page.
AI Call Notes may not be backported to Pixel 6-8 due to processor limitations. However, Google may still bring the feature to older Pixel models.
