Standard hinges utilize four toothed gears, enabling symmetrical rotation during opening and closing. Conversely, a gearless hinge employs CAMs, which transform rotational motion into linear motion, to preserve symmetrical movement.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7, a chief competitor to Google's foldable devices, also opts for a gearless hinge. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 incorporates a redesigned Armor Flex hinge featuring a droplet design with a multi-rail system. This hinge design has allowed Samsung to significantly reduce the device's thickness.
