Google is experimenting with a simpler image editing tool in Gemini.

Great AI isn’t enough if the controls feel clunky. Google appears to agree.
The Nano Banana Pro offered significant enhancements to image quality and editing capabilities compared to the Gemini 3 Pro Image. The model produces excellent results, even with complex image editing tasks. However, users still have to use a separate application to add annotations, highlight sections, or include notes on an image.
According to recent information, Google is working to address this issue.
Leaker TestingCatalog reported that Google is incorporating image annotation tools directly into Gemini for the web. This would enable users to draw on images, circle items, and overlay text within the same interface used to create and modify images, removing the need to export and edit images in another program.
This development follows earlier discoveries of markup-related user interface components within the Gemini mobile application's code. Now, this functionality appears to be expanding to the browser version, where many users perform more extensive edits.
The mobile version displays pop-up windows, suggesting that annotations could be linked to localized, prompt-based editing. Instead of using text to describe an edit, users could visually mark an area and instruct Gemini on the next action.
This would simplify the creation of complex prompts. Users could employ visual cues to indicate the specific areas of their image that need adjustments.
This solves a significant issue with current AI image tools, which often rely on guesswork, leading to inaccuracies. The ability to visually mark a specific area would give Gemini a more precise and controlled way to interpret instructions, especially for edits involving fine details or multiple overlapping elements.
Although seemingly small, this feature is significant.
The ability to annotate directly on an image may seem like a minor addition, but it is very important for AI image tools. Currently, most users depend on external markup apps to highlight regions or indicate specific changes. Integrating this step into Gemini would improve the entire editing process.
It also makes the tool more accessible for beginners. Instead of writing detailed prompts, users could simply mark the areas they want to change.
Google has not yet announced this feature; however, with annotation user interfaces appearing on both mobile and web platforms, testing seems to be in progress. When released, Gemini’s editing workflow could become significantly more intuitive and powerful.
