Google is relying on a group of superfans to keep details about the next Pixel phone under wraps.

Google's new testing program might be its unconventional attempt to manage its massive leak problem.
Google is trying a new approach by allowing a select group of "Superfans" to test an unreleased Pixel phone. The "Trusted Tester Program" marks a departure from the typical secrecy employed by OEMs, particularly as Google deals with persistent leaks.
According to a Bloomberg report, Google has invited its "Superfans" to apply for this program. The company will reportedly select only 15 individuals to evaluate a Pixel phone that is still under development.
Participants must sign a strict NDA and keep the hardware concealed in "protective cases provided by Google." Applicants will be evaluated based on their "passion for Google Pixel," and they are encouraged to offer suggestions for improvement.
This strategy differs from how other tech companies usually operate. Apple, for example, maintains tight control over pre-release hardware. Google, however, has struggled with leaks, with renders and sometimes even physical devices appearing months before launch. This program may be an attempt to embrace its community while gathering feedback and managing the narrative.
The Pixel 10 was similar to the 9, and Google’s hardware chief, Ivy Ross, stated earlier this year that they want a new "design language" every few years. This testing program could be for the Pixel 11 or 12, which may introduce a significant refresh.
Some may see risks in entrusting 15 people with a highly anticipated phone and expecting them to maintain secrecy. However, involving fans and collecting feedback from actual users could be valuable, especially when testing a new design. It could be Google's way of getting ahead of leaks by releasing the phones themselves in a controlled environment.
The Google Pixel 11 might switch from Samsung to MediaTek.
The Google Pixel 11 might also bring back more advanced face unlock technology like the Pixel 4.
