Google is testing a battery-saving feature for the Pixel's always-on display.

To preserve battery life, some phones let users schedule when the Always-On Display (AOD) turns on. This gives access to information at chosen times, and disables the AOD when it is not needed. Pixel phones lack this feature, but Google is said to be creating a way to give Pixel users greater control of their AOD.

A new Android Canary version contains interesting Pixel features, including a redesigned flashlight slider. Code within the Settings app shows a new option that will let Pixel users turn off the AOD to conserve battery when no user activity is detected. Android Canary is the earliest public channel for feature releases.

Android Authority found code strings in Android Canary related to controls that can disable the AOD when the phone is not in use. One code string verifies the display turns off when there is no activity. The other notes that the display is powered down when no user activity is detected.

While Pixel users can manually disable the AOD in Settings > Display & touch, the code found by Android Authority would do this automatically when the phone is inactive.

The code strings do not specify when a Pixel is inactive. Google could use a feature similar to Samsung's "Auto" AOD, which disables the AOD when the device is in a pocket, or when the user is asleep. Google sometimes brings features to older Pixel phones, so this feature could be available to older models.
