Google Maps now offers live, real-time lane guidance to help drivers safely navigate highway exits.

The new feature on Google Maps for cars helps you safely cross over a highway to reach the exit ramp.
Instead of attempting risky maneuvers across multiple lanes, drivers can now rely on live lane guidance for assistance. This feature helps drivers who are in the far-left lane and need to exit on the right by providing audio and visual prompts to facilitate timely merging.
The technology uses Google AI and a front-facing camera to analyze lane markings and road signs. This data is then combined with Google Maps navigation, which enhances directions with real-time traffic updates, estimated arrival times, and alerts. The Polestar 4 will be the first to use this feature in the U.S. and Sweden in the coming months. Google intends to broaden the feature to include more vehicle types and roads through collaborations with major car manufacturers.
Google reports that over 2 billion users globally depend on Google Maps each month for efficient and safe navigation. The app also assists users in discovering dining, lodging, entertainment options, and landmarks at their destinations. Google Maps is available for download on iPhones via the App Store and on Android devices via the Google Play Store.
This feature is exclusively for in-vehicle use, as it requires a front-facing camera and on-board AI processing. The mobile version of Google Maps offers a standard lane guidance feature, which visually indicates the correct lane for highway exits without needing a camera or AI to determine lane positioning.
