The chat interface has been refreshed with message threads now appearing in rounded containers, matching the home screen's aesthetic. The app bar at the top retains shortcuts to calls and other options.
Animated wallpapers have been replaced by solid color backgrounds in both light and dark themes, for a refined and cleaner look when scrolling through conversations.

The media picker has been updated. A dynamic button group at the top adjusts based on the media type selected. The search bar has been relocated to prevent adjacent text fields, and Photomoji has been subdued to highlight other media choices.

While this appears to be the final visual phase of the redesign, there are additional updates. The newest beta suggests Google is introducing QR code-based key verification, a security measure to confirm the identity of the person you are messaging. This is a small but vital enhancement as message security grows in significance.
Collectively, these modifications provide Google Messages with an updated feel while maintaining its usability. Streamlined visuals, enhanced media tools, and improved security should help users communicate more easily and securely.

While this seems to be the last visual stage of the Messages redesign, there are more changes internally. The recent beta indicates that Google is beginning to implement QR code-based key verification, a security feature that ensures you are communicating with the intended recipient. It is a small but significant addition as messaging security becomes increasingly crucial.
All of these changes give Google Messages a modern, updated feel without compromising functionality. More refined visuals, improved media tools, and better security should make it simpler and safer for people to continue chatting.
