Google Messages may soon add a long-awaited feature.
A new feature coming to Google Messages can be found on other messaging apps.
A limited number of Google Messages app beta program members have access to a new feature: @mentions. One user with Samsung open beta 20251103 rc00 reported seeing the feature. However, the same user, also a Messages app beta tester, does not have a beta release on a Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16 QPR2 Beta 3.3 and therefore does not see @mentions. The Google Messages version with the feature is 20251103_00_RC00.
@Mentions ensure message recipients see important communications within RCS chats. Many Android users have anticipated this addition to Google Messages. One Reddit user expressed a common sentiment, saying, "About time!" Other messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram already offer similar @mentions.
To use @mentions, Android users need Google Messages. If the app is not on a device, it can be installed from the Google Play Store using a provided link.
When a user is @mentioned, they will see the "@" symbol on that specific chat in their inbox, indicating they have been tagged.
