Google might push free Gemini 3 Pro users to paid plans with new restrictions.

Gemini 3 Pro capabilities have been restricted for non-paying users.
Google's latest large language model, Gemini 3 Pro, launched earlier this month with initial limitations of five prompts daily for free users, similar to Gemini 2.5 Pro.
Google updated its support page, stating that due to high demand, non-paying users will now receive only "basic access" to Gemini 3 Pro. This means the prompt limit will fluctuate based on the load on Google's AI servers. The higher the load, the faster the daily quota is reached. Testing revealed the limit was sometimes reached after just three prompts.
Similar changes affect the Gemini 3 Pro image creation model, Nano Banana Pro. The previous limit of three images per day for non-paying users has been reduced to two.
Upon reaching the daily limit, users will receive a message and responses will be powered by Gemini 2.5 Flash instead of Gemini 3 Pro. Image creation will also switch to the Flash model, which does not provide the same level of detail as Nano Banana Pro.
NotebookLLM also announced a rollback of access to Nano Banana Pro-powered Infographics and Slide Decks for free users due to high demand. An "additional limit" has also been applied to Pro users, with the number of uses varying based on server load.
Google has implemented these limits for Gemini 3 Pro text and image creation only for unpaid users. Paid subscribers maintain their previous limits and features.
The Gemini AI Pro plan, priced at $19.99 monthly, offers 100 prompts and 100 image generations per day. The $249.99 Gemini AI Ultra plan includes 500 prompts and 1,000 image generations daily. Users can subscribe if the free tier does not meet their needs.
Whether a subscription is worthwhile depends on the user. The Gemini Pro plan came as a perk, and a subscription might not be necessary for typical use, considering what is currently offered.
Gemini 2.5 Flash may suffice for most text prompt needs. Image creation is a noticeable difference between Gemini 3 Pro and 2.5. However, unless a large number of high-quality AI-generated images are required, a $20 monthly subscription may not be justified. Additional benefits like 2TB of cloud storage may be excessive for many users.
If high-quality AI-generated images, detailed responses, and significant storage are needed, a Google AI plan may be beneficial. Otherwise, the free plan could be sufficient. When free Gemini 3 responses are exhausted, users could switch to ChatGPT.
ChatGPT allows up to 15 responses and image creation using GPT-4o for free. Once those are used, switching to another provider is an option, potentially avoiding payment for AI tools.
