Google is introducing new “agentic” features in AI Mode, enabling users to book tickets or schedule meetings. These features are available to Labs users in the US, with increased usage for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
This move is logical, as making AI Mode more accessible on mobile devices will likely keep users within Google's environment, instead of switching to platforms such as ChatGPT.
AI Mode was initially launched in March as Google’s response to Perplexity AI and ChatGPT Search. Since its release, Google has consistently updated the feature with new tools and capabilities.
Now that OpenAI has released its own browser, Google is enhancing its own features by integrating AI Mode directly into Chrome on mobile. The competition between the two companies is increasingly apparent.
While AI Mode may simplify and accelerate information retrieval for some, others may find it less intuitive. Some users may prefer the traditional search method of manually exploring links to find information.
Regardless, this seems to be the future of search, and it may be time to adapt.
