Google Translate is rolling out new features to make real-time conversations flow more smoothly.

Powerful translation features are now coming to the Translate app for everyone.
Google has announced new Gemini AI-powered features for the Google Translate app designed to make conversations in different languages more seamless. The updates include real-time, natural conversations and an integrated language-learning tool, bringing Google's AI to one of its most widely used apps.
The primary feature is an upgraded live conversation mode. The previous version could be awkward, requiring each person to take turns speaking. The new version uses Gemini AI to detect when someone stops talking and the other begins, accommodating accents and pauses for a more natural conversation. Google states that its voice recognition is optimized for noisy settings like cafes.
This development follows Google's real-time translation capabilities demonstrated for the Pixel 10 series. While other manufacturers have not matched this level of functionality, Google is incorporating these translation capabilities into the free Google Translate app. This allows Google to extend flagship features to all users, regardless of their device.
The second feature is a language practice mode, expanding Translate beyond a simple tool into education. Users can set their skill level and objectives, and the app will create personalized listening and speaking exercises. This feature aims to increase user confidence and is launching in beta for language pairs such as English speakers learning Spanish or French.
These practical AI updates address real-world problems and enhance the app's utility. Although initial availability is limited, the ability to transform phones into better conversational tools is a significant benefit. Real-world performance remains to be seen.
Separately, "Iconic Phones: Revolution at Your Fingertips," a coffee table book about the 21st century's technological revolution, is scheduled for release in a few months.
