Google Translate's app has been updated with new features to improve usability.

Google Translate is adding new buttons to expand the app's functionality.

The "Understand" button will explain the reasoning behind translations, offering deeper insight and context, such as:

* Grammar explanations that analyze sentence structure.

* Clarification of word sense and idioms.

* Cultural context regarding politeness or gender.

The "Ask" button will let users request customized translations from AI, to adjust the tone (formal, casual, simplified), get alternative translations, see regional variations, or incorporate specific terms. These AI-powered buttons are currently labeled as experimental.

These additions allow Google Translate to offer explanations and customized translations to suit particular user needs.

An upcoming update to Google Translate for Android, version 9.21.36.816661266.2, will feature a larger font for translated text, also in full-screen mode, to improve readability. This update is not yet available on all devices, but the larger font is already present in the iOS version.

Google Translate product manager Matt Sheets stated the company is expanding beyond simple translation, enabling users to "listen and speak with confidence." This aligns with their prior announcement about incorporating educational features akin to Duolingo.

The Translate app has a "Practice" button at the bottom right. Users can select English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese, and choose a skill level (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced) to learn Spanish or French.

Suggested topics include family conversations, city navigation, and job-related communication.

Users can focus on professional, everyday, or personal conversations in settings such as school, travel, or discussions about arts and culture.

In August, Sheets mentioned the app's tailored practice sessions adapt to the user's skill level, which is still considered a beta feature.
