Google Translate will soon let users choose a setting before using the app.

Google Translate users will be able to choose to make the app translate faster or translate more accurately.
Google Translate recently gained "Understand" and "Ask" buttons. "Understand" explains the reasoning behind a translation, clarifying how words or phrases were interpreted. The "Ask" button allows users to request a customized translation, such as using a specific tone (formal, casual, simplified), alternative translations, regional variations, or incorporating particular terms.
The app is also adding a model picker, located under the Google Translate logo, letting users select between "Advanced" and "Fast" translation models. The "Advanced" model is for complex translations needing accuracy and currently supports English to/from Spanish and French.
The "Fast" model prioritizes speed for quick translations. Users can switch models by tapping the pill-shaped button, similar to model selection in the Gemini app.
The "Fast" model is useful for translating street signs or menus while traveling. The "Advanced" model is suitable for translating documents requiring precise understanding. It is not yet known if Google will charge for using either model. Users might prefer "Fast" if they find the "Advanced" model too slow or "Advanced" if translations are inaccurate.
The model picker is currently appearing for some iPhone users but is not yet available on Android.
