iPadOS 26.2 is being tested with a change that will be significant to longtime iPad users.

Apple is adding Slide Over back into iPadOS 26.2 despite getting rid of it with iPadOS 26.
Apple is currently testing the third developer beta of iOS 26.2 and iPadOS 26.2. The update includes several improvements to iOS 26, which itself was a significant update with visual and functional changes.
With iOS 26, the company removed Slide Over and Split View multitasking to introduce a new window-based system. However, iPad users were not completely satisfied with this change, so Apple responded.
Now, if users have at least one app open on the Home Screen, they can drag and drop other apps into different multitasking views, including Slide Over. Users can drag an app from the Dock, Spotlight search, or the App Library to the far left or right of their display to enter Slide Over mode. Dragging to the left or right creates a tiled view similar to Split View.
iPads are well-suited for multitasking, and Apple has been working to enhance this experience in recent years. The large screen and powerful processors of iPads make them increasingly capable. As a result, it makes sense to leverage this power and provide users with more capabilities.
The new multitasking features that Apple has introduced to the iPad with iPadOS 26.2 are useful. The new window-like option is similar to how the Mac functions and is a favorite update for iPads.
However, some users who are more accustomed to Slide Over may be dissatisfied with the changes. Introducing new features while retaining older, functional ones is important.
