iPhone 18 Pro Release Date Has Already Crushed The Competition - Forbes

Apple is set to launch its iPhone 18 Pro family on September 9th, an aggressive date that impacts the smartphone industry. This annual launch window systematically overshadows events like IFA Berlin, depriving mid-range Android devices of crucial media attention. Apple gains a significant "last-mover advantage," forcing competitors such as Samsung and Google to adjust their premium phone release schedules to avoid direct marketing collisions. North American carrier upgrade cycles align perfectly with Apple's September calendar, channelling extensive marketing support and customer upgrades towards the new iPhone, effectively drowning out rival Android flagships. This fixed, predictable launch date allows Apple to dominate retail shelves and media headlines, solidifying its market position.

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 18 Pro family on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Give or take a few days, this is the predictable launch window of every new iPhone. It’s also a date that allows Apple to be aggressive; the competition knows the date, knows what’s coming down the line, and is forced to avoid it as best they can. Apple’s preferred iPhone launch date is one of the most aggressive moves that the Cupertino business makes each year.

Apple’s early-September iPhone 18 Pro launch systematically deprives IFA Berlin exhibitors of media oxygen, while mid-range Android devices face severe component margin pressure.

This year, IFA Berlin takes place from Sept. 4 to Sept. 8. Since 2005, it has taken place annually and is seen by many smartphone manufacturers as an opportunity to launch new hardware, akin to an “end-of-year Mobile World Congress.” While IFA is not exclusively for smartphones, it has seen key launch events in recent years, such as last year’s Galaxy S25 FE.

It’s not the best venue for launching premium handsets, even with the world’s press in attendance. The portfolio of new launches benefits mid-range handsets more than the flagships. That may offer IFA a slight advantage this year as Apple moves the vanilla iPhone 18 to spring 2027, putting similar pressure on MWC. Yet mid-range handsets are under the most financial pressure due to rising prices and lower stock levels of memory and storage across the production chain, making them a bet with far less return now that Apple has moved into the premium space.

Samsung and Google are forced to compress their hardware release cycles to avoid direct marketing collisions with Apple’s dominant fourth-quarter iPhone timetable.

Apple has effectively secured a last-mover advantage in the premium space. Samsung has repeatedly delayed the launch of the Galaxy Z Foldable range to give it as much time as possible to become established before the iPhone arrives. Google has a similar choice to make on the Pixel, with just two weeks between the reviews of the Pixel 11 Pro arriving and the reveal of the iPhone 18 Pro to the world’s press; a moment that will hand Apple all the digital headlines and column inches it can handle.

Whether competing smartphones choose to avoid the iPhone and move further away from the commercially rich fourth quarter, or launch closer to and accept any momentum is going to be squashed once Apple’s smartphone neuters their efforts, the true winner is Apple. The iPhone 18 Pro can clear the bases when it launches, allowing incoming CEO John Ternus to start out with a continuity product which will dominate retail shelves.

As Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports, Apple is expected to increase the price of the iPhone 18 Pro between $100 and $200:

Two months ago, Apple boosted prices on nearly every major product category outside the iPhone, with affected Macs and iPads rising about 23% on average. The MacBook Air went up $200, the Mac Studio price jumped $500, and the iPad Air hike was $150. With the same memory and silicon shortages weighing on the iPhone, an increase there remains inevitable."

Although there will be sticker shock for consumers buying a new iPhone 18 Pro, it won't be as painful as you might think. The reason is another last-mover advantage the iPhone 18 Pro family has earned. Thanks to their summer product launches, both Samsung and Google have raised prices on their base smartphone models, largely due to the ongoing crunch in memory and storage chips. For months, consumers have been hearing stories of rising prices and have now faced them in retail stores and shopping sites.

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will be more expensive year-on-year compared to the iPhone 17 family, but consumers will see Apple simply ‘following the market conditions’ with the price rise, rather than being the first to ask for more money. The Galaxy and the Pixel took the pain so the iPhone will enjoy the gain.

North American carrier upgrade cycles align directly with Apple's September retail calendar, starving competing Android flagships of carrier marketing support.

Apple’s release of the iPhone, particularly in North America, sweeps away the competition on so many levels. It smothers other launch events and PR activities as it launches its own phone. With notable traffic boosts over the Android competition guaranteeing more digital inches and headlines, the associated media coverage drowns out alternatives.

With so many consumers locked into 12- or 24-month smartphone contracts that end just as the next iPhone hits retail shelves, carriers’ PR campaigns around the iPhone help bring customers back for another contract.

Apple is locked into an early September release date for many reasons. Even knowing that, the competition has not found a simple way to match the elephant in the room. Apple will quite happily take advantage of this fixed launch date and the pressure it can apply to the wider smartphone ecosystem. The launch date of the iPhone 18 Pro remains a red-letter day for the industry.
