iPhone's live translation feature can help reduce stress during international travel.

In Messages, setup is easy. After turning on the function for a specific chat, any text you get in another language appears in your language immediately. Here's how:
* Go to a conversation in Messages.
* Tap the contact’s name at the top.
* Select "Automatically Translate."
* Pick your languages from "Translate From."
For calls, Live Translation acts as an interpreter in real time. You activate it during the call, and the translated audio is played to you as the other person speaks. In FaceTime, Live Captions provides translated subtitles on the screen during the conversation.
What are the strengths of Live Translation?

Because Apple Intelligence powers the system, its advantages and incomplete aspects are noticeable. Its biggest advantage is how naturally Live Translation integrates into Apple’s apps. It is built into the communication platforms you already use, so there is no need to switch apps or use a separate translator.
The AirPods integration is also convenient. When both users have compatible devices—iPhone 15 Pro models or later, plus AirPods Pro 3—the setup avoids passing a phone back and forth. It feels more seamless.

Privacy is another advantage. Because the translation occurs on the device, your conversations and voice data remain on your phone. This is significant for private conversations.
What are the drawbacks?
Currently, limited language support is the biggest drawback. Since Apple must create and optimize each translation model to run on the device’s Neural Engine, fewer languages are supported compared to cloud-based tools like Google Translate.
Dealing with nuanced language is another challenge. Slang, specialized vocabulary, complex sentences, or strong accents can result in literal translations that lose meaning or cause confusion.
Also, in face-to-face conversations, the simultaneous audio can be overwhelming. Hearing the original speaker and the translation at the same time can be difficult to process if the person speaks quickly or if the conversation is fast-paced.
Why is it important?
Despite its limitations, Live Translation is a practical application of mobile AI. Unlike AI tools for generating emojis or images, or using AI for emails, translating languages is genuinely useful. You cannot learn every language, so this tool reduces stress when traveling or speaking with someone who speaks another language. It eliminates guesswork and the need to search for translations.
Live Translation is important because it reduces language barriers. Although it is limited to newer iPhones now, it will likely become a widely available feature in the future.
