Is Mega Starmie any good for Pokémon GO Raids? - Pokémon GO Hub
Mega Patrick Starmie anyone?! In fact, Mega Starmie’s stats are pretty similar to Mega Raichu X. The difference in DPS between Mega Mewtwo Y and Mega Starmie is a whopping 62.66%, while the difference in DPS between Primal Kyogre and Mega Starmie is 38.21%.
We got a slew of new Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and its DLC, but none of them has been as hilarious as Mega Starmie, which just got longer legs and became glossier. And yes, it runs like a human being, leaving players in stitches just by looking at it. Mega Patrick Starmie anyone?!
With the Super Mega Starmie Raid Day debuting this hilarity in Pokémon GO, you must be wondering if good ol’ Starmie finally gets a share of the spotlight in the game’s tightly contested PvE scene. Does this star shine in the Raids meta or fade into oblivion?
Let us check out its stats first and then discover if it’s a star in the making (okay, enough with the star puns).
Mega Starmie has Tier 2 Mega Evolution-level stats; that is, stats that are close to those of some Legendaries, but still well below the 300 mark. In fact, Mega Starmie’s stats are pretty similar to Mega Raichu X. That said, when considering the meta-relevant Pokémon in its typings, 276 ATK is actually pretty good for a Water type, and decent for a Psychic type.
So does this Mega Star qualify to be a part of your higher-tier Raid entourage? Or is it best used in Tier 3 Raids?
Using our trusted GO Hub DPS Comparer Tool:
We’ve come to a point where dealing DPS close to the Legendary Kyogre makes a Water Pokémon viable, but not top-notch. With Primal Kyogre, strong new Megas like Mega Greninja and Mega Feraligatr, and tons of fearsome Shadows (I haven’t even featured the likes of Shadow Kingler and Shadow Crawdaunt here), cementing oneself as a premier Water-type attacker is a challenge.
Mega Starmie is actually among the lower power level of Water Megas alongside Mega Sharpedo (more or less the same DPS) and Mega Gyarados, and the Hydro Cannon Megas all dominate the scene. On paper, it makes sense for Mega Starmie to be among the counters you include in your squad when you rejoin a Raid, but with only one Mega slot for the taking, you have several stronger options, emphasizing again the Water starter Megas running Hydro Cannon. Mega Starmie ends up being best used in Tier 3 or easier Tier 5 Raids where you don’t have to fight too hard to clinch victory.
Even though Mega Starmie dishes out more damage in the Psychic department, it is actually further outclassed here. The difference in DPS between Mega Mewtwo Y and Mega Starmie is a whopping 62.66%, while the difference in DPS between Primal Kyogre and Mega Starmie is 38.21%. Moreover, with every trainer in the world getting a free Hundo Mewtwo via the 10th Anniversary Celebration Timed Research that can be turned into Mega Mewtwo Y right away, players have absolutely no reason to invest in a Mega Starmie, especially when the rest of the Psychic line-up can be filled with Shadow Mewtwo and regular Mewtwo.
Mega Starmie is a classic case of being a usable Mega Evolution, but one that is outclassed in a way that you would hardly ever use. As such, there is no point investing your hard-earned resources into this Pokémon. Sure, if you like Mega Starmie and want to have a meme-worthy moment in Raids, feel free to power it up, but use it responsibly in Raids with a large number of players, where an easy victory is assured. Do make it your Buddy to see its silly antics on the map, but when it comes to combat, there are far better options in both the Water and Psychic typings.
