Many Verizon customers experienced their phones displaying "SOS mode" this morning.

An outage hit major cities around 1 a.m. ET with service restored by 3 a.m.
User Julie Spears reported in October 2025 that their phone repeatedly ended calls and failed to reconnect.
User Daniel, also in October 2025, noted constant issues with phone service and mobile internet in Knoxville.
Data from Downdetector indicated a surge in reports around midnight ET, reaching a peak of 1,244 before quickly declining as service was restored.
Approximately 51% of users reported phone issues, while 32% experienced problems with 5G home internet. Verizon apparently resolved the issue quickly, and service is now stable.
The impact was felt across the largest carrier in the US.
Verizon, the nation's biggest mobile and broadband provider, supports over 146 million wireless connections, meaning such incidents can affect homes and businesses nationwide.
The overnight timing likely minimized the impact, and the number of reports was small relative to the total user base.
Even major carriers experience occasional outages. T-Mobile recently had one, and AT&T customers faced similar issues a few weeks prior.
These problems can arise from software errors, faulty updates, or configuration mistakes. Physical factors like fiber cuts, power failures, or weather can also disrupt service. Although rare, cyberattacks are also a potential cause.
Regardless of the cause, Verizon appears to have regained control swiftly, and service is currently stable.
