Mercedes-AMG has a hot new coupe, and you can’t have it. It’s called the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, and all 30 examples that the automaker will build are already sold. The ultra-exclusive car is the second from Mercedes Mythos, the brand’s ultra-luxury low-volume sub-brand launched in 2022.
The 646 packs a 637-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter flat-plane-crank V8 engine that sends the power exclusively to the rear wheels via the nine-speed AMG Speedshift transmission. The engine produces 627 pound-feet of torque, with a high-performance exhaust, developed in collaboration with Akrapovič, providing the soundtrack.
The coupe has a Launch Control system tuned to the rear-wheel-drive layout. According to the automaker, the new Mythos can accelerate from zero to 62 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds. It needs 11.4 seconds to reach 124 mph and 36.8 seconds to hit186 mph. The car’s top speed is 193 mph.
It has tailorable traction control, a unique steel-sprung coilover suspension, and four-way adjustable dampers. It rides 0.9 inches lower in the front and 0.6 inches in the rear. Stopping power comes from 16.5-inch front and 14.2-inch rear ceramic brakes, with six- and single-piston calipers, respectively, that sit behind 20-inch wheels.

The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung features a heavily modified body and a stance 2.4 inches wider than the stock CLE 53. The automaker used carbon fiber to cut weight, dropping 375 pounds.
Mercedes uses carbon fiber for the fenders, front fascia, side sills, hood, roof, and rear bumper while adding a robust aerodynamics package that generates over 550 pounds of downforce at top speed. The car has an adjustable front diffuser, fender louvers for ventilation, an integrated airflow channel next to the headlights, and an adjustable rear wing.
Inside, the automaker is conscious of weight. Mercedes removed the rear seats, acoustic insulation, and several driver-assistance features, while simplifying the sound system and reducing the number of creature comforts.
The 646 comes with ultra-lightweight bucket seats, lightweight carbon-fiber door panels, and a roll bar. Mercedes even went as far as using polycarbonate for the rear side windows and rear window.
An optional Performance Package adds six‑point harnesses. The car features a faded paint finish, which starts at the front as Mojave Silver Magno and transitions to Obsidian Black Magno at the B-Pillar.
Motor1’s Take: The world needs more V8-powered coupes, and Mercedes-AMG has delivered. Sadly, only a handful of wealthy buyers will get the opportunity to experience this menace, but it highlights what's possible, even if most of us will never drive one.
