Metagame Mentor: The Top Standard Decks for September 2026's RCQs - magic.gg

Hello, and welcome back to Metagame Mentor, your weekly guide to the top decks and latest Constructed developments on the path to the Pro Tour. The most common path to Pro Tour qualification begins with a strong performance at a Regional Championship, and the typical route to a Regional Championship is through a Regional Championship Qualifier (or RCQ). The current RCQ round, running until November 29, features Standard as the designated format for in-store Constructed events.

To help you prepare for these Standard RCQs, this article provides a Standard format primer. I'll highlight the top decks in the current metagame, along with their game plans, key cards, and recent tweaks.

Standard is a rotating 60-card format that currently allows expansion sets from Wilds of Eldraine forward. There will be no rotation in the fall of 2026. The next major Standard rotation will take place in early 2027, alongside with Prerelease events for Nauctis: The Sunken Realm.

To determine the shape of the metagame in the second half of August, I analyzed over 400 successful tournament decks from August 18 through August 31. My dataset was comprised of every published Magic Online Standard Challenge decklist from this time period, along with several dozen top decklists from various RCQs around the globe, including the 131-player Champions Cup Premium Qualifier in Tokyo.

To show which decks are dominating the top tables, I assigned points to each based on its rectified number of net wins, calculated as the number of match wins minus losses, with negative values adjusted to zero. This means that a deck earns more points by both putting more copies into the tournament and converting those entries into match wins. By combining these points across all events, each archetype's share of the total rectified net wins blends popularity and performance into a single, comprehensive metric: the winner's metagame share.

In this table, each archetype name hyperlinks to a top-performing decklist that closely reflects its aggregate build. The "Other" category collects decks with less than one percent winner's metagame share, including Temur Ferocious, Jeskai Control, Elves, Boros Dragons, Mono-Red Aggro, Temur Spellementals, Gruul Leyline, Jeskai Lessons, Izzet Opus, Sultai Reanimator, Gruul Harmonizer, Azorius Oculus, Sultai Control, Izzet Wizards, and more.

Compared to my previous Standard metagame snapshot from two weeks ago, which showcased the first tournament results after the August 10 banned and restricted announcement and the release of Magic: The Gathering® | The Hobbit™, Landfall decks have surged ahead in popularity. In the meantime, Orzhov Life Gain and Jeskai Lessons have dwindled in popularity.

The three most prominent archetypes now account for over half of the winner's metagame, so you should expect to face Mono-Green Landfall, Dimir Midrange, and Izzet Spellementals frequently at Regional Championship Qualifiers. Of the three, Mono-Green Landfall is the most-popular choice by far.

Llanowar Elves Earthbender Ascension Sazh's Chocobo Mossborn Hydra Icetill Explorer Mightform Harmonizer Sapling Nursery

Across all main decks and sideboards combined in my Standard dataset, the most played nonland cards all come from Mono-Green Landfall. At the top of the list are Llanowar Elves and Earthbender Ascension. These ramp effects let Landfall decks deploy their powerful threats ahead of schedule, while Earthbender Ascension can even effectively yield two landfall triggers by targeting Fabled Passage. As the next five cards on the list of the most-popular cards all have landfall triggers, that's an important interaction. Altogether, this underscores just how prominent Landfall strategies have become in the current Standard metagame.

Mono-Green Landfall has multiple game plans, managing to do a little bit of everything. It can start aggressive with Sazh's Chocobo or threaten turn-four kills with Mightform Harmonizer. It can also grind through long games with cards like Sapling Nursery and Ba Sing Se, or by milling Esper Origins with Icetill Explorer. It isn't easy to combat all of these plans simultaneously, but there are ways to exploit the fact that Mono-Green Landfall relies on ground-based creatures and runs very little interaction.

Sunderflock is one of the strongest cards against the deck, as it can flip the script against creature-based strategies and win the game on its own. Izzet Spellementals has traditionally had a slightly favorable matchup against Mono-Green Landfall, and I believe that the metagame is ripe for the return of Four-Color Elementals as another home for Sunderflock.

Fast combo strategies, such as Temur Omniscience or Bant Airbending, may be able to take advantage of Mono-Green Landfall's relative lack of interaction. Landfall decks have gotten slightly slower after the banning of Badgermole Cub. These combo decks, assisted by a well-timed removal spell, may very well have enough time to assemble a game-winning combination.

Momo, Friendly Flier [5FC6ABuV3ieGToBSC3emuB] Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant

Many other aggro, midrange, and control strategies may struggle against Mono-Green Landfall's multifaceted power. However, an aggressive deck relying on flying creatures, such as a well-tuned Azorius Momo or Boros Dragons deck, may be able to go under Mono-Green Landfall by soaring over its ground blockers. A control deck that combines a plethora of sweepers with plans for dealing with Sapling Nursery and Ba Sing Se, perhaps with Flashfreeze and Petrified Hamlet, may out-grind Landfall through sheer card advantage.

While it will require some deck-building finesse, the tools are there. The important thing is to recognize that no single answer is likely to be enough. You need a broader plan that addresses the different ways Mono-Green Landfall can attack you. Plan for the Mono-Green Landfall matchup when you enter an RCQ tournament. With the deck accounting for more than a quarter of the winner's metagame, simply hoping to dodge it is not a viable strategy.

Still, there's more to Standard than Landfall. To highlight the most relevant Standard decks for the current Regional Championship Qualifiers, I have constructed aggregate decklists using an algorithm that balances the popularity and performance of individual cards. With that, let's take a closer look at the top eleven archetypes to beat, each of which claims at least 2% of the winner's metagame.

Mono-Green Landfall is currently the deck to beat in Standard, commanding 27.8% of the winner's metagame. Although it lost Badgermole Cub, that card was never an essential piece of the deck, and it has been replaced by alternatives such as Shared Roots.

The deck's game plan leverages Escape Tunnel and Fabled Passage to generate multiple landfall triggers in a single turn, with Icetill Explorer effectively doubling the pace of land drops. When everything comes together, Sazh's Chocobo grows to enormous proportions, Earthbender Ascension piles on additional +1/+1 counters, and Mightform Harmonizer threatens lethal attacks seemingly out of nowhere.

A recent tweak in many successful Mono-Green Landfall lists is the addition of Warg Tactics to the sideboard. One of the reasons to add a flexible answer to fliers is that more and more blue players are adding Wan Shi Tong, Librarian. Since Mono-Green Landfall's engine relies on fetch effects like Earthbender Ascension, Fabled Passage, and Escape Tunnel with Icetill Explorer to recur those lands, Wan Shi Tong turns every single one of those searches into a free +1/+1 counter and an extra card. Warg Tactics is a reliable answer to the card-drawing Bird Spirit.

Dimir Midrange aims to disrupt opponents with a mix of removal, discard, and countermagic while pressuring them with cheap, evasive creatures. Once Enduring Curiosity hits the board, those creatures can quickly refill your hand. Kaito, Bane of Nightmares adds even more card advantage to the mix.

It's a popular strategy, accounting for 12.1% of the winner's metagame, though it doesn't seem ideally positioned against Mono-Green Landfall or Izzet Spellementals.

Izzet Spellementals runs a high density of cheap instants and sorceries that draw cards, interact early, and fill the graveyard for Eddymurk Crab and Hearth Elemental. Because both creatures are Elementals, they can reduce the cost of Sunderflock to just two or three mana, allowing you to reset your opponent's board and swing the game dramatically in your favor.

Traditionally, Izzet Spellementals has been favored against Mono-Green Landfall. Sunderflock is less devastating now that it isn't returning earthbent lands from Badgermole Cub, so the edge is narrower than it used to be, but I believe that Izzet Spellementals is still a strong choice in a field dominated by Landfall decks.

Selesnya Landfall builds on Mono-Green by adding a white splash for Erode. Erode provides an efficient, instant-speed answer to threats like Enduring Curiosity, Eddymurk Crab, or Mightform Harmonizer, allowing you to disrupt your opponent at precisely the right moment. At the same time, Erode can be pointed at your own creatures, ideally an earthbent land, to generate additional landfall triggers when the situation calls for it. The white splash also unlocks Dyadrine, Synthesis Amalgam; which forms a potent card-advantage engine alongside Sazh's Chocobo.

The white splash does lead to a slightly weaker mana base and makes Sapling Nursery more expensive to cast, so it's generally not included in the main deck in Selesnya lists. Still, Erode offers a meaningful edge in the Landfall mirror, so the white splash appears to be a clever choice for the current metagame.

Azorius Momo boasts one of the strongest openings in the format. By starting with Momo, Friendly Flier on turn one, followed by Springleaf Drum and Sage of the Skies on turn two, the deck can quickly deploy a pair of 2/3 flying lifelinkers to seize the damage race.

Momo also reduces the warp cost on Starfield Shepherd, which in turn can fetch Nurturing Pixie to bounce itself and generate additional value. Quantum Riddler, when paired with Daydream, offers another potent avenue of attack. From there, Abandoned Air Temple or Practiced Offense can amplify the fliers into a formidable air force.

Four-Color Control seeks to dictate the pace of the game through a carefully balanced mix of removal, sweepers, and card-draw spells. Tablet of Discovery serves as the deck's central engine, generating card advantage, accelerating your mana production, and enabling a devastating turn-five Jeskai Revelation. Once you start chaining Jeskai Revelation into Flashback or another Jeskai Revelation, the deck snowballs quickly. Meanwhile, Stock Up finds key cards, Inevitable Defeat answers opposing threats, and Great Hall of the Biblioplex ties the mana base together.

Many successful lists have cut No More Lies and added Together as One. When playing against this deck, you shouldn't be afraid of getting your spells countered. However, once the deck reaches six or seven mana, you can expect a streak of powerful haymakers with life gain attached.

Mardu Discard uses Iron-Shield Elf and Hardened Academic to discard cards at will, transforming what would normally be a drawback into a source of powerful synergies. These discard enablers grow Marauding Mako and Moonshadow, trigger Cool but Rude for additional damage, and place Bloodghast into the graveyard, ready to return to the battlefield.

The deck's aggressive synergies even open the door to a turn-three kill. Imagine you start with Marauding Mako on turn one, deploy Hardened Academic on turn two, then discard Bloodghast, Practiced Offense, and another card to swing for six damage. On turn three, you can play a land to return Bloodghast and cast Practiced Offense from your graveyard, growing Hardened Academic in the process. You then put a +1/+1 counter on each of your creatures, grant double strike to the 5-power Hardened Academic, and attack for lethal!

Dimir Excruciator is built around the devastating potential of Doomsday Excruciator. After it exiles both players' libraries down to six cards, a single attack with Restless Reef is usually enough to force the opponent to draw from an empty library. Emeritus of Ideation's prepared spell, Ancestral Recall, can also target the opponent, providing another way to finish the game. To set everything up, Superior Spider-Man plays a crucial role, preserving the cast triggers from Deceit and Doomsday Excruciator.

The deck won Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed earlier this year, and it remains a legitimate contender in the current Standard metagame. Its unusual game plan makes it particularly difficult to prepare for. Opponents must respect the Doomsday Excruciator combo and the deck's more traditional control elements.

Azorius Artifacts makes the most of United Battlefront. With 31 noncreature, nonland permanent cards with mana value 3 or less, the likelihood of finding two in the top seven cards of your library is approximately 96%. If you hit Simulacrum Synthesizer and another three-mana artifact, you'll immediately create a Construct token and get ahead on board. Soon after, that Synthesizer will overwhelm the opponent with an onslaught of enormous Construct tokens. If need be, Repurposing Bay can fetch The Fire Crystal to give your creatures haste and accelerate the kill.

The rest of the deck lets you play a controlling game, answering opposing threats with Perilous Snare, Pinnacle Starcage, Dusk Rose Reliquary, and so on. This combination of early battlefield development and flexible interaction allows the deck to pivot smoothly between offensive and defensive approaches.

The key enablers in the deck are Hinterland Sanctifier and Case of the Uneaten Feast. Whenever a creature you control enters and you gain life, Amalia Benavides Aguirre immediately explores; Haliya, Guided by Light builds toward card draw; and Lunar Convocation provides additional value on each of your end steps. The latest aggregate list has shaved options like Deep-Cavern Bat or Raise the Past and instead emphasizes the life-gain triggers even more via Essence Channeler and Leonardo, Cutting Edge.

While Orzhov Life Gain claimed a major share of the winner's metagame immediately following the recent bans, its prominence has dwindled recently due to a poor matchup against Mono-Green Landfall. The deck's ability to gain large amounts of life is far less effective against Mightform Harmonizer, which can repeatedly double the power of a single attacker.

Mono-Black Aggro is a relative newcomer, based around various powerful cards from Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit. Nighthowl Pursuer and Desolation Prowler lead the pack, letting you attack with a 3/3 and a 4/4 as early as turn three. Gollum, Riddle Master is a powerful two-drop who hits hard, draws cards, and attacks your opponent's life total.

With efficient early-game creatures, high-power menace attackers, and direct damage to close out games, Mono-Black Aggro packs a punch. It is one of the more straightforward aggressive decks in the format, but its combination of speed and individually powerful threats gives it plenty of room to punish slower decks or opponents who stumble.

The current round of Regional Championship Qualifiers features Standard as the designated format for in-store Constructed events. While Mono-Green Landfall, Dimir Midrange, and Izzet Spellementals have emerged as the leading decks in the winner's metagame, Standard remains a deck builder's paradise where almost anything seems possible. As players look for ways to attack Mono-Green Landfall, the format will no doubt continue to evolve rapidly in the coming weeks.

If you'd like to put your Standard skills to the test, you can find an RCQ event near you through your local game store or your regional organizer's website. And if your aspirations extend beyond becoming the hero of your local game store, be sure to check out Magic Spotlight: Fracture, a massive open-field Standard tournament taking place at the end of October in Hartford and Beijing. With a fresh metagame and so much high-level Standard competition on the horizon, the coming months promise to be an excellent time to explore the format.
