Metal Gear Solid 4 Remaster Has Otacon Saying New Voice Lines Regarding Swapping Discs and Being Digital-Only - MP1st
But what about on PC, a platform that doesn’t have physical media? Ownership has changed. Ownership has changed.
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 releases later this week, though fans seem to have already gotten their hands on it and noticed some changes, including a new voice line. We teased it in our review last week, but yes, it’s true: Konami has hired Otacon’s voice actor, Christopher Randolph, to once again recite one of MGS4’s biggest jokes for each platform.
While current-gen platforms seem to have very similar lines because each supports physical media, the PC version has a more specific platform line that sees the series embracing its digital future.
This post contains spoilers for Metal Gear Solid 4
With Metal Gear Solid 4 finally becoming available on modern platforms after 18 years of being sealed away on the PS3, Konami has taken it upon itself to update one of the game’s iconic jokes. You may remember that, in the original PS1 version of Metal Gear Solid, Solid Snake would receive a codec call from Otacon, informing him he needed to change the disc to continue playing the game. It was one of the many fourth-wall-breaking jokes Kojima had included that played around with the idea of players physically needing to do something.
Well, this joke later returned in Metal Gear Solid 4 when Solid Snake, or more accurately, Old Snake, returned to Shadow Moses (the location of the first game), where Otacon would once again recite the line only to realize we were playing on a new platform that didn’t need multiple discs.
Well, the lines have been updated for each platform (PS5, Xbox, Switch, and PC), and with the game now getting into the hands of some players early, here’s what it sounds like on each platform (minus Xbox for now)
PS5: “Oh, wait. We’re on PlayStation 5. It uses high-capacity media, too. No need to swap. Damn it, Otacon. Get a grip. Yeah. What an age we live in, huh, Snake? Wonder what they’ll think of next.”

Interestingly enough, Otacon makes no mention of the Nintendo Switch 2 in the Nintendo version of the game, whereas he’s mentioning the PS5 in the PlayStation version. The lines are basically the same aside from the platform mentioned, and we can probably assume the Xbox version will either mention the Xbox Series or follow the Switch 2 version and omit the platform mention as well. But what about on PC, a platform that doesn’t have physical media? Well, glad you asked, because the PC version is indeed platform-specific and refers to the type of media it uses. We can confirm this ourselves.
Yes, Otacon, what will they think of next? In my most David Hayter voice impression of Old Snake: “Ownership has changed. It’s no longer about cartridges, discs, or preservation. It’s an endless series of storefronts dictated by publishers and platforms. Media—and its consumption of culture—has become a well-oiled machine. Ownership has changed. Account-tagged users access account-tagged libraries, use online-check systems. DRM protocols inside their systems verify and regulate their access. License control. Delisting control. Pricing control. Ecosystem control. Everything is authenticated and kept under control. Ownership has changed.
The age of physical ownership has become the age of digital access. All in the name of averting inconvenience through the illusion of infinite libraries. And he who controls the server… controls the medium. Ownership has changed. When the library is under total control… Erasure becomes routine.”
Digital-only releases have become a very hot topic in the past month or so, due to Sony’s announcement that they are ceasing physical game releases starting January 2028. It doesn’t help that the PlayStation Store is outdated when it comes to features and refunds — something we discussed in an article.
Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 releases on August 27, 2026, on the PS, Xbox Series X|S, the Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. If you’re wondering whether it’s worth getting or whether Konami did these remasters justice, you can find out in our review (spoiler alert: it is worth getting, and Konami has done it justice).
