Notability's Android arrival gave me the digital whiteboard I've been searching for since 2010 - Android Police

As a cross-platform user, I use both Android and the Apple iPhone, which gives me the best of both worlds. Yet, some apps remain siloed to either side.
I've wanted certain utilities to cross over, and Notability finally did. It's now on Android and has become my blank canvas for making sense of the mess in my head on my mobile devices.
Notion's modern tools and flexibility offer an improved note-taking experience
Ideation is rarely organized, contrary to how many productivity apps like to present it. It's why I mostly stick to note apps as a jotter for reminders and quick entries.
Personally, brainstorming requires something closer to a whiteboard. That is, somewhere I can draw with a marker, erase, asterisk something for later, clean the whole thing off, and redo it from scratch.
I wasn't about to chuck a giant whiteboard into my already tiny home space. I stuck to hunting for a digital version instead. I once used Obsidian to try and cluster my thoughts.
It worked, until it didn't, but it's not because of a skill issue or shortcomings on its part. It just has a learning curve that dampens my motivation before I've even opened the app.
Notability is now core to my ideation process, right down to its UI, because it clears away most of the visual noise.
The free app entered beta on Android in April 2026, then came out on Google Play in early August 2026, ending roughly 16 years of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS exclusivity since its original 2010 launch.
The default interface opens to a minimalist menu with low-contrast tones, soft grays, and off-whites. It feels like stepping into a Zen space that makes it easier to think without distractions.
I have the freedom to start anywhere on the blank page when I create a new note, be it the middle, top, or bottom corner.
I mostly use it for character and world building, since I work closely with animation teams to curate backstories.
I may scribble a character's name in one corner, detail their abilities, and draw a line connecting them to a different name across the page where they might be related.
Notability's right toolbar holds a duplicate icon for cloning pages, undo and redo arrows, a share icon, and a three-dot menu where I access my version histories and customize the app's template.
Along the bottom are the selection tool, a pen for freehand drawing, an image insert tool, an eraser, and others.
Switching to text mode brings up controls for alignment, list formatting, line spacing, indentation, and a highlighter. You'll scroll and pan with two fingers in pen mode because it's a workaround to avoid stray ink.
But tapping the hand icon lets you scroll with a single finger as normal. I use the selection tool to highlight anywhere on my screen, then type.
This way, I can drag and reposition the input. The + button below lets me add reference photos near the text to create a visual mood board.
I love that collaboration is built in, since I can share my mood board with teams. It makes it easier for graphic designers to walk through what a character should feel like.
I also use the folder feature to keep projects separate, so one universe's characters don't bleed into another's.
Voice recordings on Notability are commendable, and the audio quality is always clear when played back. The app strings individual memos together into one running take, but I can play and delete them individually.
So, bad dictation doesn't force me to scrap the whole session. There's also a playback speed feature with 1x, 1.5x, or 2x options.
Although I've ditched note apps for my Comulytic Note Pro recorder in meetings, I mostly repurpose this feature for information dumping. I may press record and talk out spontaneous character motivations loosely.
I can even get the transcript through the AI-powered Learn menu. Tapping the file icon with a sparkle in the right toolbar accesses it.
The menu is more capable than I originally thought. It offers an avenue for me to learn on the job. Beyond images, the app also allows me to insert files and math equations.
The Learn tool can read through the uploads and generate summaries, flashcards, quizzes, or a chat interface to ask it questions. On one occasion, I uploaded a full craft book on character arcs.
The best part was being able to select a specific page range from that material and leave everything else out. The tool generated flashcards from the selected content, allowing me to memorize facts.
Then I received a quiz to test my newly gathered knowledge.
Notability's standard tier has a monthly limit of five notes. For me, it's fair, considering I don't juggle a dozen projects simultaneously.
Plus, I've learned to mitigate it. The app's native .ntb format keeps a note fully editable after I export it. I may also export it as a PDF or image and delete the original copy to free up the slot.
The pricing model runs across four paid tiers. Lite costs $12 monthly for unlimited notes along with third-party backups on iOS.
Plus costs $16 monthly and adds up to 100 YouTube link-to-note conversions a month, 400 AI-powered quizzes and flashcards, audio recording and transcription, and 30-day version history.
Pro is the most expensive monthly plan at $80.
It provides unlimited transcription with real-time AI summaries, YouTube conversions, quizzes and flashcards, live audio transcription, the ability to chat with your notes for explanations, and 90-day version history.
Outside the subscriptions, there's also a Classic one-time payment of $40.
It includes handwriting recognition and instant handwriting search, handwritten math conversion to LaTeX, live collaboration, sync across devices through Notability Cloud, and seven-day version history.
The note-taking app that finally clicked for me
It took a lot of note-hopping on Android to get to Notability, and settling here isn't to discredit every other app I tried along the way.
I still keep using Google Keep for quick idea captures and shopping lists, and Obsidian to link multiple notes and find them easily months later.
The bottom line is that app switching is rarely clean. No single tool covers every part of how you process things mentally, so choosing one over another usually means giving up something you needed.
I've found that combining them gives the best results.
