Nothing is experimenting with lock screen ads in its latest beta software.
The Nothing OS 4.0 beta is out, and one of its most noticeable new features is actually a little disturbing.
Even more concerning is that a Reddit user identified the provider of the wallpapers and ads as Bouyan, a Chinese digital advertising platform.
The only positive aspect is that Lock Glimpse is disabled by default. Other similar features did not have this setting. Some budget phones, such as those from Motorola and Samsung, include a Glance Lock Screen feature that displays ads on the lock screen and is enabled automatically.
Glance provides that feature and in 2022, denied placing ads on the lock screens of US phones. Samsung and Glance later revealed the Glance AI feature earlier this year, describing it as a new platform for shopping and styling.
Nothing makes no mention of AI when describing Lock Glimpse, though some wallpapers certainly seem AI-generated, which might further frustrate some users.
Hopefully, the backlash against this feature will be significant enough to force Nothing to remove it from their software. Their marketing emphasizes user feedback and the best possible user experience. This is an opportunity for Nothing to meet the expectations they have created.
