Nothing Phone (1) users can now try an unofficial version of Nothing OS 4.0.

A developer port brings new features to the EOL device, proving the hardware is still capable.
An independent developer has reportedly succeeded in porting Nothing OS 4.0, which is based on Android 16, to the original Nothing Phone (1). The achievement is notable because Nothing has ended official software support for the device.
Android 16 has been released, and Nothing is currently beta testing its Nothing OS 4.0 on newer models, including the Phone (2) and Phone (3). The Phone (1) has been officially excluded from these updates.
However, the developer community has stepped in. TechiBoy, a YouTuber, recently posted on X that an anonymous developer has managed to install Nothing OS 4.0 on the first-generation smartphone. This unofficial port involves modifying the software from a newer phone to function on the older Phone (1).
TechiBoy states that the port includes the new Camera application with its presets and appears to be mostly functional.
However, the port has some flaws. According to the post, there are unresolved issues such as the clock in the status bar not being properly aligned and the camera view being partly obscured by the punch-hole.
This development comes as Nothing has declared the Phone (1) as end-of-life (EOL). The announcement means the device will no longer receive official Android updates or security patches.
Despite Nothing's decision to focus on newer devices, this port suggests that the Phone (1) hardware is still capable of running current software. The situation highlights the conflict between manufacturers' upgrade cycles and community efforts to extend the life of functional devices.
Currently, this port is most relevant to developers and tech enthusiasts. However, it provides Phone (1) owners with some reassurance that their devices are still viable.
The decision by companies to discontinue support for devices that are still functional can seem wasteful. The Phone (1) was a distinctive phone that established the brand.
While some details are unconfirmed, the port represents a significant achievement for the community.
Installing this early, unofficial port is not recommended at this time due to potential issues and security risks. However, it demonstrates that "end-of-life" is often a business decision rather than a technical limitation. It shows that the Phone (1) can still be useful, even without the support of its creators.
