Remember those custom vibration patterns we spotted hiding in Google’s apps last year? Turns out, they’re no longer just hidden in code. Google has quietly debuted them on the Pixel 11 series, giving users much more control over how their phone buzzes for calls and notifications.

We first revealed Google’s plans to let Pixel owners customize their vibration patterns in an APK teardown of the Google Sounds app. The unreleased version we examined showed that Google was working on separate vibration options for both ringtones and notifications, allowing users to mix and match their preferred sounds and haptics. Those features have now arrived on the Pixel 11 series.

To customize the vibration used with your Pixel 11 ringtone, head to Settings > Sound & vibration > Ringtone > Vibration. Google gives you a recommended vibration pattern up front based on the ringtone you’ve selected, so you don’t have to manually figure out which combination works best.

However, you can change the vibration for any ringtone with a selection of patterns, including Classic Long Vibration, Heartbeat, Gears, and several others. You’ll also see an option to tweak vibrations as you select different ringtones from the Sound Collection menu.

Notifications also get their own set of vibration patterns. On the Pixel 11 series, you can find them under Settings > Sound & vibration > Notification > Vibration. Here, you can choose from options including Classic Short Vibration, Rattlesnake, Pulse, and others.

The exact feel of each pattern varies, with some providing short, sharp taps and others delivering longer or more elaborate vibration sequences. Most of the vibration patterns are aptly named, with their names giving you a pretty good idea of what each one actually feels like. But Google isn’t stopping at system-wide vibration settings. The second feature we previously uncovered is also rolling out.

Back in September last year, we reported on code in Google Contacts that hinted at the ability to assign a specific vibration pattern to individual contacts. That functionality is also live on the Pixel 11 series.

To set it up, open the Contacts app and select the contact you want to customize. Tap Contact ringtone > Vibration, and you’ll get the same collection of ringtone vibration patterns available in the main Sound & vibration settings.

That means you could assign one pattern to a family member and another to, say, your best friend. If your phone is sitting in your pocket, you can then get an idea of who’s calling simply from the way it vibrates.

For now, these features are exclusive to the Pixel 11 lineup. It’s unclear whether Google plans to bring them to older Pixel phones in a future Pixel Drop, although there’s no obvious reason why they couldn’t make the jump.
