Rumors suggest the iPhone 18 may have upgrades that are significant enough to skip the iPhone 17.

From a next-gen chip to a screen makeover and even a possible foldable, Apple might finally bring the changes I’ve been waiting for.
Many consumers may be wondering whether to purchase the new iPhone 17 or wait for the iPhone 18. Although an upgrade may be due, the potential features of the iPhone 18 make it an appealing option.
Several possible upgrades may make waiting worthwhile.
The iPhone 18 series is expected to feature a new A20 chip built on a 2nm process, compared to the A19 chip in the iPhone 17 series, which uses a 3nm process.
This could lead to a 15% increase in speed and a 30% reduction in power consumption. The smaller transistors may allow the chip to run cooler, improving battery life.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models, expected in 2026, may have under-display Face ID. This would remove the Dynamic Island, leaving only a small hole-punch for the front camera. The Face ID sensors would be located under the screen.
Apple may also release its first foldable iPhone in 2026.
The initial model is rumored to have a book-style design. The possibility of a flip-style foldable version could also be considered.
These upgrades remain speculative.
Waiting for the iPhone 18 may be a good choice for iPhone 15 or 16 owners. These phones remain capable, and the iPhone 15 Pro models already support Apple Intelligence.
The 2nm chip, under-display Face ID, or a foldable design may make the iPhone 18 a more compelling upgrade.
