Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold impressed reviewers, but its future is still uncertain.

A triple-foldable isn’t practical – it’s a statement. Here’s why.

Despite the excitement surrounding it, along with its engineering achievements, I doubt the Galaxy Z TriFold will become a typical, everyday phone. I don't believe Samsung intends for it to be one.
Samsung is known for display experimentation, with the TriFold being its most recent example.
Samsung is always pushing the boundaries of display technology into unusual, advanced areas. Over the years, they've introduced many display concepts: single-fold panels (now commonplace), flexible displays, screens that fold multiple times in various directions. Their labs likely resemble a science fiction movie set.

The "folds twice" idea has evolved from a concept to an actual product, which will likely be expensive (over $2000). This alone positions it as a niche product, but the form factor further limits its appeal.
Most consumers don't require a phone that expands into a 10-inch screen. Those who desire a large display typically purchase a tablet. The cost of a flagship phone and tablet is still less than a complex tri-foldable device attempting to combine both.
Beyond cost, most people lack the daily need for such an ambitious device. While a large, pocket-sized screen could benefit power users who handle documents, photos, and multiple apps on the move, it's excessive for the average user.
The size and weight are also considerable. The Galaxy Z TriFold measures 159.2 x 75.0 x 12.9 mm when folded and 159.2 x 214.1 x 3.9 mm when unfolded, resembling a small tablet. It weighs 309 grams, similar to a small tablet (even less than an iPad mini). This is not a device you can easily slip into your pocket.

As someone who prefers smaller phones, like the iPhone mini, I hope future devices become smaller, not larger. I prefer a device that's barely noticeable. A tri-foldable is the opposite; it would be difficult to carry without a bag.
Therefore, the Galaxy Z TriFold (like the Huawei Mate XT) will likely remain a niche product. Samsung is aware of this; its goal isn't to replicate the success of the Galaxy S line. It's a display of technological prowess, demonstrating its advanced display capabilities.
Sometimes tech exists to demonstrate possibilities.

A key aspect of technology is demonstration. Samsung enjoys showcasing its ability to create products that competitors cannot. As the display industry leader, it needed to respond when Huawei entered the triple-foldable market.
Samsung aimed to make a strong statement. The Galaxy Z TriFold isn't intended for mass consumption but to convey a message. Samsung's entry into a new category usually creates a domino effect, encouraging other companies to follow suit, regardless of sales.
Tecno and Honor have also presented triple-foldable concepts. These will materialize eventually, not due to the Galaxy Z TriFold's commercial success, but because companies don't want to be excluded from emerging hardware innovations. When a major brand enters, others join in to prove their capabilities.

Triple foldables may not be the future, but they serve a purpose.
Triple-foldable phones may not be the industry's future direction. Even standard foldable phones are still gaining mainstream acceptance. However, these devices are significant. They highlight the ongoing experimentation and innovation within tech companies as they seek the next product that will drive consumer purchases.
Ultimately, they maintain the industry's excitement and intrigue, keeping tech enthusiasts engaged and anticipating future developments.
The Galaxy Z TriFold may not have a major impact, but it reminds us that technology's future isn't always about practicality. Sometimes, it's about demonstrating the ability to create something extraordinary simply because it's possible.
