T-Mobile is requiring customers with older 4G and early 5G phones to upgrade soon.

The move indicates a transition to 6G.

The first 6G standard is anticipated to be complete in 2029, a year after T-Mobile discontinues 4G for most users. 6G is expected by 2030, which explains T-Mobile's motivation to end 4G.

While there is no firm date for T-Mobile's 6G rollout, the 4G shutdown is a step toward upgrading 5G, which will support 6G. T-Mobile has been ahead of other companies in 5G rollout, and its eagerness to move away from 4G suggests it may again lead in 6G.
