Why might the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra be mistaken for a laptop?
For many years, tech companies have been promising a single device that can handle everything. Samsung could be closer than ever with the Tab S11 Ultra. It is Samsung's most ambitious attempt yet to replace laptops because of its hardware, software enhancements, and compatibility with accessories that increase its capabilities.
DeX is essential here. On the Tab S11 Ultra's large 14.6-inch display, it transforms Android into an operating system that resembles a desktop. You can move windows around, utilize a taskbar, and even connect a mouse and keyboard; the Book Cover Keyboard from Samsung makes it feel more natural.
The S Pen is another feature. The majority of laptops cannot compete with this stylus. It's ideal for taking notes, drawing, or annotating documents while on the go, making it a great tool for students, designers, and professionals that require precise input.
The Tab S11 Ultra is also very portable. The Tab S11 Ultra is remarkably thin and light, despite having a large display. It is much easier to transport than even the thinnest laptops, making it ideal for people who frequently travel between offices, meetings, or cities.
DeX has also matured. By connecting via USB-C and pairing a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you can even use it on a separate monitor. Although some minor issues will persist, such as awkward text selection and a mouse pointer that occasionally acts differently than on a PC, it is surprisingly functional.
My colleague has previously argued that "the future is in Desktop Experience," and I can see why if you want to learn more about why this is important for the future.

Where Laptops Still Dominate
The Tab S11 Ultra is excellent, but it is not a perfect solution. There are still tasks that a standard laptop performs better, and in some instances, only a laptop will do.
One factor is software. Although Android apps are now much more optimized for DeX than they were in the past, you will still run into problems if you need to use specialized desktop-only applications like comprehensive video editing programs, engineering tools, or certain coding environments. Android does not yet have these options.
That is related to the operating system. Although DeX gives Android the appearance of Windows, it is still Android at its core. You cannot use.exe files or access extensive system-level capabilities as you can on Windows or macOS. That is a dealbreaker for experienced users, developers, and IT specialists.
Another drawback is connectivity. A laptop offers connections like USB-A, HDMI, and Ethernet right out of the box. What about the Tab S11 Ultra? You'll require dongles or a hub, which can quickly become disorganized.
Although file management has gotten better, Android's file system is still less reliable than a laptop's. Compared to the drag-and-drop functionality you would expect on a PC, moving large amounts of data between apps can feel clumsy.
Finally, there is the cost. The Tab S11 Ultra seems like a viable laptop substitute on paper. But after adding the Book Cover Keyboard, possibly a monitor, and a hub for all of your accessories, you end up spending about the same amount as you would on a high-end laptop.
Therefore, can it truly take the place of your laptop?
Here's my conclusion: For many individuals, but not for everyone, the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra with DeX can absolutely replace a laptop.
This tablet might easily serve as your sole device for students, casual users, and even many professionals who spend their days browsing the web, sending emails, editing documents, or watching content. It is adaptable, light, and powerful.
The response is somewhat muddled for creatives. The S Pen and large display make it ideal for sketching and design tasks. However, you'll still need a standard computer on hand if your work depends on particular desktop apps.
And for serious power users, developers, or anyone who pushes their devices with resource-intensive apps, the answer is probably "no." Although the Tab S11 Ultra is quick thanks to its MediaTek Dimensity 9400+ CPU, it cannot handle everything that a high-end Windows laptop or Mac can.
In conclusion, the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra can function as a laptop replacement, but only if you value versatility and light productivity over specialized software or demanding power. In addition, the starting price is $1,199.99. It is not exactly cheap. To put things in perspective, you could purchase a MacBook Air with Apple's incredibly fast M4 chip for around $200 less, or a capable Dell laptop in the same price range that will give you full desktop software and ports without the need for additional accessories.
