The iPhone 17 may require a new USB charger for its fast-charging feature.

Apple’s new phones support faster charging, but they may do it in the most Apple way imaginable.

You may need a Dynamic Power Adapter from Apple
According to the official specifications for the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, they can reach 50% charge in only 20 minutes, while the iPhone Air gets to 50% in half an hour. This charging rate, however, requires Apple’s new “40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max,” which stands out for a couple of reasons.
The name accurately describes the charger’s capabilities. It can reach 60W, but only briefly before overheating and dropping to 40W. According to a test by Reddit user privatebok on r/UsbCHardware, this lasts around 18 minutes.
It also supports the new Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS) protocol, which allows for precise voltage control for efficient charging. The charger can then select a specific voltage for the fastest charging without overheating the battery.
It's unclear if the new iPhones will need an AVS charger for fast charging. Most chargers likely only support the older Programmable Power Supply (PPS) protocol, which handles 40W, 60W, or higher, but lacks AVS's granular voltage options.
It’s more than just the name, though
Another problem with Apple’s new charger is its lack of PPS support. It only offers the standard USB Power Delivery 3.0, making it less useful for charging other devices, which is disappointing for a $39 product.
Google’s Pixel Flex Dual Port 67W USB-C Fast Charger supports AVS, USB PD 3.2, and PPS. It also has two USB-C ports and reaches 67W, potentially fast charging more devices, but costs $59.99, making it more expensive.
That’s how Apple does things
Apple is among the few companies to embrace new standards and stick with them, in their own way. The USB-C adoption was sped up by its exclusive use on new MacBooks. Apple was also the last smartphone maker to switch to USB-C, so it’s not all positive.

Adopting a new charging standard may be difficult at first, but it is the correct move. The problem is that the rest of the industry usually lags behind.
